Meet Kierra Jackson of K.M.J. Kollkektion in Southwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kierra Jackson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kierra. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
K.M.J. Kollektion is a virgin hair company based in Houston, Texas. I started K.M.J. Kollektion in 2018 when I realized that I should share my love for hair with more than just my friends and family. While in undergrad I would frequently make my own wigs and would always get asked, “who did your hair”, and “where did your hair come from?”. For years I was consistently putting money in other people’s pockets with my referrals. I would always tell my friends that I wanted to have my own hair company, but I never thought I would actually make it a reality. Then, in 2018 I finally decided to make my dream a reality and I began the process of starting K.M.J. Kollektion.

Has it been a smooth road?
This experience has been anything but smooth. I have had to deal with various struggles, but that is expected when starting any business. Between finding the balance of starting a new business, finishing grad school, and working full time, I had a number of other things I struggled with and still do struggle with.

I had to first learn about the basics of running my own business, and the basics of the hair game from the business perspective. This took some time, and with hair trends always evolving I was always learning something new or having to relearn something because the old method was no longer the most efficient way. I basically had to completely change my view of the hair industry from a regular consumer mindset to that of a business owner.  I learned a lot of what I know from watching YouTube videos and researching what it would take to be a business owner.

One of my biggest struggles is dealing with imposter syndrome. I had a lot of self-doubt regarding running my own business. I would never set an actual launch date and just kept pushing everything back. Starting K.M.J. Kollection took a lot longer than it should have because I was always second-guessing my decision to have my own business. Every once in awhile I still struggle with imposter syndrome but staying optimistic about being a business owner and seeing other like-minded individuals reach their goals has helped me deal with the self-doubt. Also, when those thoughts begin, I get up and do something that will benefit my business. No matter how big or small the task may be. For example, I may create a promotional flyer or develop content for my website or social media. As soon as I get up and do something that will push K.M.J. Kollection forward those thoughts disappear.

Another struggle of mine is that I am a slight perfectionist. If something is not exactly how I envisioned it then I refuse to put it into the world. I had to learn that when you have your own business things will not always be “perfect”. Sometimes things do not go as planned or turn out how you envisioned it, and that’s okay. What’s important is how you bounce back when things are not your idea of perfect.

As I said, my experience has been anything but smooth. But even with that being said, I am grateful for each one. Every bump in the road has taught me something new about having my own business, and myself.

As a company, I would have to say I am most proud of my craft as a wig maker. I’ve come a long way from making wigs in my dorm room to now finding the confidence to provide my services to others. I love the look on a customer’s face when my hair gets installed and they were provided with exactly what they asked for and more.

I believe what sets me apart from others is that I take action, and anticipate the customer’s needs before they ask. Great customer service is of the utmost importance and I make sure my customers feel as if they are my only priority. I always strive to ensure that each customer’s experience with K.M.J. Kollection is better than the last.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is a great place to start a hair business or any business. The beauty industry and more specifically the hair industry in Houston is so big and consistently growing that opportunity and money are always out there. There is always room for a business to flourish and grow.
