Meet Kim and Paul Froberg of Froberg Nursery in Alvin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim and Paul Froberg.

Froberg Citrus Trees and Nursery was established by Paul and Kim in 2009, but the love of agriculture and the tradition of farming has been passed down for generations. Paul’s grandfather started Froberg’s Farm in the 1930’s and is still in operation today.

Froberg Nursery is a family oriented business. Paul loved agriculture even as a boy and began budding fruit trees as a young adult. When he decided to open their own nursery, just a half a mile down the road from the family farm, he knew it would be a family affair. Paul and Kim have four children-3 boys and 1 girl. All of them have been or are still involved in the business. Paul buds some of his fruit trees but with the demand from the public he now seeks help from a local wholesale grower to keep up with the supply needed to stock the nursery.

Paul has also branched out into maintenance contracts and consulting for the customers that need assistance in raising and or solving the problems that they encounter. Paul loves what he does and does what he loves. Paul and Kim have a true passion for their business and treat their customers like family. Because they want the customers’ trees to grow and prosper, they encourage the customers to involve them in the growth of the trees. They want to help them over the phone, through text with pictures or come out for a service call if need be.

Froberg Nursery is open on weekends only and closed from the first of June through the end of October. The nursery will reopen the first weekend in November. Some people ask them why are you closed during the summer. The answer is, fruit trees have a hard time accumulating to the hot summer in our southern climate. They would rather not make a sale than to sell a tree that dies and the customers become discouraged about growing fruit trees.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Most of the seasons have been good but they have had a few rough ones. As Paul has always said “that’s agriculture”. Thank goodness for bank loans. The love of it keeps them going.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Froberg Nursery – what should we know?
We specialize in fruit/citrus trees. We are most proud of our customer service. Every customer that comes through the gate is a potential friend for life and treat them as such. The employees are knowledgeable and if they don’t know the answers they will find out the answer. The Froberg’s home phone is connected to the business line so they try to always be available.

The nursery also has a fruit tasting so customers can sample the fruit before they buy the trees. This service is offered from the first of December through mid-February. Of course this is due to change considering Mother Nature. The public can come out from November through February to “pick their own fruit”. We provide the clippers and bags and the family provides the fun.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Sharing the knowledge that Paul has about fruit trees. He knows what to do in any situation that occurs with the trees. That’s the very reason they opened the nursery, to share the knowledge so others can enjoy the labors of their fruit.
