Meet Kim Roxie of Lamik Beauty in River Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Roxie.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kim. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Native Houstonian who grew up on the southwest side of Houston. Attended college at Clark Atlanta University and started my company is my college apartment. Saved up $9500 while doing a financial diet of only eating $2 day at Wendy’s, with no shopping, all saving and my mom gave me $500 to open my first store at Sharpstown Mall. I knew I was getting ready to graduate and I couldn’t find a job, so like my college mantra taught us, you find a way or make one. So, I made a company so I could have a job. 13 years later and we are still here!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been many challenges along the way, like my mom passing from breast cancer in 2014 and I had to persevere through the pain. Now I advocate for women to use our paragon free and talc free makeup products, we have to use safer makeup. I am a millennial and sometimes there are obstacles as a young business person to navigate entrepreneurship and growth in the marketplace with season vets.

LAMIK is an eco-chic cosmetic company based out of Houston, TX. Our company name is an acronym that stands for Love and Makeup in Kindness, because Love and Kindness is what we are made of that makes us beautiful. There is a quote I coined some years back when we started that says, Beauty is Revealed, not applied. That philosophy now tells the true meaning of being beautiful and is inclusive, and does not exclude you for your unique looks. LAMIK is an empowerment brand! We are known for the uplifting initiatives and events we support benefiting women and girls. Like the local YWCA, Star of Hope women shelters, Alief & HISD schools, and other deserving organizations. We are also known for our problem-solving products, like the celebrity brow kit. I personally, have suffered with alopecia, and my brows haven’t grown in fully and I use the celebrity brow kit to fill in my sparse brows and everywhere I go, people rave over my brows! For a person that has been suffering from hair loss, the brow kit empowers me. I am most proud of the strides we have made as a company to blaze a trail for other women owned business and women that had to overcome barriers to reach success and maintain it.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up in Houston was amazing, I played the piano, and I was very proud of my talents musically and I felt like it made me attractive. As I matriculated through high school, I slowly felt unpretty by the songs I would hear, boasting beauty as a fair skin, long silky hair image. I didn’t feel pretty anymore in Houston, so I went to college in Atlanta, where I felt more attractive.

Also, while growing up I loved to talk and make friends, never had an altercation in school.
