Meet Kim Smith of Rayne Wares in East Austin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Smith.

Kim, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I “retired” from the beauty industry at 24 and was lucky enough to be offered a part-time job with Dana Kimbro at Accent Upholstery just “helping out” while I figured out what my next path in life was going to be. There I learned the in’s and out’s of running a business while also learning a new trade and fell in love with the craft. When I turned 30, I decided to take a leap, with the love and support from Dana and my family, to start my own business. I quickly outgrew our one car garage and a year into the business I signed a lease on a warehouse with a retail space and still can’t believe it’s real.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been difficult for me to find that good work/ life balance. When I am passionate about something I get tunnel vision and give it 1000% and it’s all I can focus on. I’ve been working on setting boundaries and just tell myself it’s OK to take a break and relax once in a while.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Rayne Wares – what should we know?
I work primarily in residential and commercial upholstery projects, shifting toward working exclusively with designers, artists and fabricators in 2020. I most enjoy custom projects and being able to work with other creatives bringing their ideas to life. I have a pretty eclectic aesthetic and appreciation for design which allows me to go from working on a total restoration of an antique chaise lounge to updating a modern modular sofa. Gimme it all!

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My mom and dad for always supporting my crazy ideas and allowing me to pave my own path (with hesitation sometimes). My sister inspires me with her dedication and drive with everything she does. My boyfriend Adam, a business owner himself, giving me the confidence and love that keeps me going. My upholstery family, Dana Kimbro and Chrisi Mitchell who I can always count on for advice and all of my clients and friends for making my little business a success.
