Meet Kimberly Avila of Qweenie RGV

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Avila.

Hi Kimberly, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Upon my return to Texas from living in Los Angeles California for a few years I knew I wanted to get involved in the food industry. I had no real plans but I had bills & student loan payments piling up. I knew I needed a change in my financial situation so I used the last few thousand dollars to my name to purchase a taco stand from Craigslist. I painted it pink and created a tiny menu of hot dogs using people’s favorite comfort foods that were familiar and decided to serve them in an unfamiliar way. I knew that if I wanted my idea to really work, it was going to have to be different from the rest. So I created the Qweenie dog & took some mouth-watering photos to promote a soft opening that I hosted outside of my parent’s house. After weeks of working nonstop, the next thing I knew, we had hundreds of followers on social media and a ton of shares & posts. I immediately fell in love with the feeling of making my way into the hearts of people by feeding them. This brand filled a void inside of me that I didn’t even know existed. Established in 2018.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road at all. Every day was a new struggle, whether it be with zoning, permits, transportation of the food trailer, or kitchen accidents, the process was a very rocky start. Especially for me, since I had zero experience in the food & service industry. I kind of just dove in head first, but I believe that’s what helped me succeed and make a name for myself in this industry because it left no room for failure.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Qweenie is where the hot dogs are savage. Not average. Our recipes served on top of smoked sausage & bacon in between a hot dog bun. From the meat we use the process of creating our buns – everything about our branding sets us apart. We truly feel that we are our own competition. I am most proud of how much knowledge I’ve gained through the trial & error process of this journey. I created a brand, artwork & recipes out of absolutely nothing and made people fall in love with our specialties. It’s. Always crazy to remember how a simple thought/ idea has changed my life.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Some big changes are currently in the works. We have opened two more locations and are working on another in north & central Texas. My vision for Qweenie is to be in every major city!
