Meet Kimberly Dabney of Kimberly Vonshay, Velvet Tresses Co. and Luxe Kouture

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Dabney.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Kimberly Vonshay, but many know me as Coach Kimmy. I am an educator, certified life coach, speaker, author, holistic wellness advocate, and beauty professional. Everything I do, whether it’s behind the chair, behind the mic, or behind the scene is rooted in one mission: to help women heal, rise, and walk boldly in their God given identity.

My journey began in the beauty industry, where I established myself as a hair artist and color chemist. I built a reputation for creating transformative color and style experiences that not only elevated my clients’ looks but also restored their confidence. Over time, I realized my work was about more than beauty, it was ministry. Many women who sat in my chair were carrying deep emotional wounds, and I became not just their stylist, but their safe space. That awareness shifted everything for me.

From there, I stepped fully into my calling as a certified life coach and trauma informed faith based mentor, guiding women through emotional healing, personal transformation, and spiritual growth. My programs, devotionals, and digital series like Becoming HER: The Chosen One and Elevate & Levitate help women break unhealthy cycles, rediscover their worth, and embrace wholeness.

I’m also the founder of the PopOut Queen brand, birthed in one of the hardest seasons of my life. After surviving emotional betrayal, job loss, financial hardship, and a stroke, God told me, “You can’t stay here. Rise up.” That moment of divine instruction gave birth to a movement. I turned my pain into purpose, creating a platform that empowers women to “pop out” of shame, fear, and limitation, and walk in divine confidence and healing.

My work expanded even further with my podcast, Behind The Mind with Kimberly Vonshay, a space designed to go deeper into the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of healing and transformation. Each episode explores the inner battles people face and how faith, mindset, and emotional intelligence intersect to bring freedom. I speak transparently about my own journey, invite empowering conversations, and provide practical tools that help listeners heal from the inside out. Behind The Mind isn’t just a podcast, it’s a healing experience where faith meets inner work and transformation begins.

As an author and speaker, I continue to share my personal journey of overcoming trauma and rediscovering identity through Christ. My writings, such as Becoming HER: Healing From the Hard Place and Broken But Not Destroyed, merge Scripture, neuroscience, and soul work showing that faith and emotional healing go hand in hand.

What sets me apart is that I don’t just teach principles, I live them. Every message, book, and brand extension I create comes from lived experience, prayer, and divine direction. I’m most proud of the women who have found hope, healing, and courage through my transparency. I want people to know that my brand isn’t about perfection, it’s about purpose. It’s about turning pain into power, shame into strength, and survival into testimony.

At the core of everything I do, whether I’m doing hair, coaching clients, recording a podcast, or speaking on stage my message remains the same: You can be broken, but you’re not destroyed. God can still use every piece of your story to build something beautiful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been smooth at all, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Every hardship I’ve faced shaped me into the woman I am today. My journey has been marked by storms, but also by the grace that carried me through them. I’ve faced betrayal from people I trusted, job loss that shook my stability, financial challenges that tested my faith, and a serious health battle after suffering a stroke. There were moments I questioned everything; my strength, my purpose, and even whether I’d make it through.

But in those hard places, I discovered the power of resilience and the beauty of surrender. Losing my job forced me to see that my identity wasn’t in a paycheck or a title, it was in who God called me to be. The second stroke I had in June 2025 humbled me and reminded me that life and purpose are precious. And betrayal taught me how to guard my peace and trust God’s vindication over human validation.

People mocked me during that season. They whispered, laughed, and assumed my downfall was final. What they didn’t know was that God was using that valley to rebuild my foundation. The very pain they ridiculed became the platform God used to elevate me. Every storm refined me, every loss redirected me, and every setback became my setup

So no, it hasn’t been smooth it’s been sacred. Every challenge was an invitation to trust God on a deeper level, and every setback became a setup for something greater. My scars tell a story not of defeat, but of deliverance. And because of what I’ve endured, I’m able to speak to other women from a place of real experience and spiritual authority. I didn’t just survive the storm; I was refined by it. The same pain that tried to break me became the platform God used to bless me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I have built a multi faceted brand that spans beauty, coaching, education, and entrepreneurship which are rooted in purpose, faith, and empowerment. At the heart of it is my personal brand, Kimberly Vonshay, which encompasses my work as a life coach, speaker, author, educator, and mentor. Through coaching programs, digital courses, and my podcast Behind The Mind with Kimberly Vonshay, I specialize in helping women heal from trauma, rebuild confidence, and walk boldly in their God-given identity. My brand is known for transparency, authenticity, and offering practical tools that merge faith, emotional intelligence, and personal development.

In the beauty space, I run a full service salon business and my hair bundle business, Velvet Tresses Co., where I specialize in luxury raw Cambodian hair bundles and expert color and style work. My goal is to help women feel confident, powerful, and beautiful because I believe that when you feel good on the outside, it sets the stage for transformation on the inside.

I also created Luxe Kouture, an online boutique available at www.Kimberlyvonshay.com, which offers curated fashion pieces that help women express their individuality and step into their power through style. Each venture I’ve created is intentional, reflecting a standard of excellence, elegance, and empowerment.

In addition to entrepreneurship, I serve as a volunteer coordinator at a nonprofit private school, where I assist students and families with outreach. I am also a contracted substitute teacher. I contribute to educating and shaping young minds. That role allows me to give back to the community while investing in the next generation of leaders.

What sets me apart is that my work isn’t just transactional, it’s transformational. Whether I’m coaching, doing hair, designing a boutique collection, or recording my podcast, every touchpoint is designed to uplift, educate, and inspire. I don’t just provide services; I create experiences that heal, empower, and elevate women spiritually, emotionally, and physically.

Brand wise, I am most proud of building a platform where faith, beauty, entrepreneurship, and personal development intersect. I want readers to know that my offerings are designed to help women rise from their hard places, embrace their full identity, and live boldly without compromise. Each venture from the salon chair to the boutique, from my coaching programs to my podcast, reflects the same mission: to turn pain into purpose, struggles into strength, and transformation into testimony

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I owe so much of who I am both personally and professionally to my incredible family. My journey has been strengthened by a foundation of faith, love, and unwavering support from those who believed in me even when life felt uncertain.

I am extremely grateful for my mother, who has made countless sacrifices to support me and my sons. She is the epitome of strength, grace, and faith. She not only supported me financially when times were hard but also spiritually, always reminding me of the power of prayer and faith in God. My mother has been my listening ear, my intercessor, and my constant encouragement in tough seasons. She taught me one of life’s most valuable lessons: to trust in the Lord no matter how things look and to find joy in life’s simplest blessings. Her work ethic is unmatched, and I believe much of my business sense and leadership skills come directly from her. Watching her push through adversity and excel without excuses showed me what true perseverance looks like. She is one of the strongest and most resilient women I know, and her servant’s heart continues to inspire me daily.

I am equally grateful for my father, who instilled in me the importance of never giving up and finding good even in tough situations. I’m truly a daddy’s girl. My father has always helped me see beyond my failures and shortcomings, teaching me the power of letting go and trusting God’s timing. Over fifteen years ago, he told me something I’ll never forget: “Kim, God will be trying to give you something better, and you’ll be holding onto what you have unable to receive what God is trying to give you.” Those words changed my perspective on loss, growth, and surrender. My father’s strength, faith, and hands on creativity inspired my own entrepreneurial drive. He’s a skilled mechanic and business owner who taught me that work done with your hands and heart is sacred.

My stepparents have also been a consistent source of unconditional love and support, pouring into my siblings and me with the same warmth as our parents. I’m also deeply thankful for the love and support of my brothers and sisters, who have stood by me through every high and low. Their encouragement, humor, and strength have been a source of grounding and motivation throughout my journey.

My Uncle Earl has been one of the greatest blessings in my life. He has gone above and beyond to help me raise and provide for my sons, blessing me in ways I could never have imagined. His generosity and commitment have left an imprint on my heart that words could never fully capture. My Uncle Elder William and Uncle Bishop Henry played key roles in developing my spiritual character, guiding me with faith based wisdom and helping me stand firm in my relationship with God. My Aunt Glinda was a guiding light during dark seasons always compassionate, understanding, and full of divine wisdom. My Uncle Marvin has continuously supported and encouraged me, especially during difficult times, always reminding me to keep going. He always is right there to encourage and help me when I’m faced with hard situations. He is so loving, kind and understanding. I will never forget the many times I’ve called needing his help and he was always right there giving words of wisdom and encouragement.

My Aunt Rosie is another special person in my life who has truly impacted my journey. She helped raise me and has been a constant source of strength and prayer throughout my life. She’s a true prayer warrior, someone I can call on at any time, knowing she will intercede and cover me in love, faith, and wisdom. Her prayers have carried me through some of my toughest seasons, and I thank God for her every single day.

My Godparents and grandmother, who are now resting in Heaven, also played a significant role in my spiritual growth. Their prayers, guidance, and presence still cover me to this day. I’m also blessed with a host of other aunts and uncles who have each played meaningful roles in my life through their love, wisdom, encouragement, and belief in me. Whether it was a phone call at the right time, a prayer when I needed strength, or simply showing up in moments that mattered most, they all contributed to the woman I’ve become. Their influence has been invaluable, and I am forever grateful for the collective love and covering of my family.

And of course I save the best for last, my two sons are my greatest inspirations they motivate me daily to be better, dream bigger, and keep going no matter how hard life gets. My sons are truly the heartbeat of my purpose. They are the reason I chose to pursue higher education and push toward my goals, even when life was challenging. Everything I’ve accomplished, from earning multiple degrees to building businesses and walking in my calling has been driven by my desire to create a better future for them. They’ve watched me overcome loss, health battles, and setbacks, and I’ve always wanted them to see firsthand what perseverance, faith, and hard work look like. My sons are my world, my greatest blessings, and my constant reminder of why giving up will never be an option. Their love and belief in me fuel my determination to keep growing, keep teaching, and keep inspiring others to rise above adversity.

Entrepreneurship and leadership truly run in my blood. There are strong, faith driven business leaders on both sides of my family, and their influence has undeniably shaped my passion for business, education, and empowerment. I’m the woman I am today because I was surrounded by people who taught me faith, resilience, humility, and hard work. I am forever grateful for their love, wisdom, and legacy.
