Meet Kimberly Sharon of Ulta Beauty in Riveroaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Sharon.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Growing up I always remembered my aunt Liz owning her little salon, always cutting hair, even mine. Seeing her work all the time in the salon, watching all of her work leave the salon and being fascinated by her expertise. Little did I know I would grow up to be an artist like her. My childhood wasn’t so easy as I remembered, then again who’s’ isn’t. My father left my mother when I was 7yrs. old, leaving her raising two kids alone. I was so young I didn’t know what was going on. As I got older, there were times my mother would ask me to color her hair with box dye she would buy from the store. I thought to myself, how hard can it be to apply color from a bottle, right? Pretty easy. One time after coloring her hair, she washed the color out, came back to the kitchen, sat down and brushed her hair, parted it in the middle, straight down, and grabbed the kitchen scissors. She said,” OK, cut my hair this short (points to her shoulders) and in a straight line, all the way around.” I thought she was kidding, but she was serious. So, I did and Voila! Uneven haircut lol just kidding. I actually did pretty good for a 14yr. old. Her having the confidence in me to cut her hair with kitchen scissors made me feel like I could do whatever I want in life and become whoever. But little did I know that my mother struggled to raise 2 kids on a budget. I guess we don’t see what life was like till we are older. Hair wasn’t always something I enjoyed, before doing hair I lived a whole other life other than hair, I’m a music major in Music Education and Performance. I was a part of the Houston Youth Symphony, American Festival for the Arts, Pasadena Philharmonic Orchestra, playing small gigs, weddings, in college I was 7th chair French Horn in the state of Texas. Boy how I miss those days. I took a BIG career change when I was mistreated in the Philharmonic. At the time my best friend Michael was a cosmetologist at Regency Beauty Institute. He encouraged me to apply to the beauty school and do hair. He made it look so easy. Sure enough, I got accepted, and the journey of being a licensed cosmetologist began. That was 9 and a half yrs. ago. I now work at Ulta Beauty in River oaks as an Elite Designer going on 7 yrs., working on becoming Assistant Salon Manager, also becoming a Redken certified colorist.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life always comes with struggles and life challenges. We just have to keep our heads up and take every day, day by day.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

They carry everything from Professional hair care, skin care, and cosmetics. “All things beauty, all in one place.” Not a lot of people know Ulta has a salon until they go to the restroom and walk by the salon. Ulta sends their stylist to be trained by Redken certified colorist masters to stay up to date with all the new trend that comes out in the beauty industry. Ulta has so many opportunities to offer within the company, and I’m proud to be a part of that. I’ve specialized in color for years and known for my signature blowouts, vivid and vibrant hair colors and hair styling. I really go out and beyond for all my clients to make them happy.

What are your proudest moments in your career?
The proudest moments of my career are seeing my clients happy and posting their hair pics on Facebook, or Instagram. Especially when I have a new guest, and they show me a picture of my work and have no idea that picture was posted by me. It’s a good feeling that people will fly from New York, or somewhere other than Houston to come sit in my chair. I must be doing something right.
