Today we’d like to introduce you to Kira Davis and Naeishia Nance.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kira and Naeishia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We initially met as coworkers at an oil & gas company in Downtown Houston in May 2012. We very quickly bonded over our love for reality shows and celebrity gossip. Everyday, our coworkers would gather at Kira’s desk while we did a recap of the previous day’s “tea”. Our comedic talk show banter continued for about one year before we decided to start a blog. This was the beginning of “Tea in the Shade”.
One day, Kira mentioned her previous goal to be a radio DJ. Ironically, Nae also pursued radio right after high school. After this conversation, we started speaking it into the universe that we would one day share a radio show so that the world (or at least the city of Houston) could participate in our shady tea.
Shortly after, Nae was scrolling on Facebook and came across a post offering time slots at a local internet radio station. This was it! We took the leap of faith, and it definitely paid off.
We were at the station for less than a year, but in that short time we learned many important lessons that shaped our journey moving forward. We met MC Kane while doing an interview, and offered to help us develop a format and narrow down our concept. He also brought in a lot of popular Houston talent for us to interview. This was his way of getting our name out there to Houston, even though our focus was “tea”, not music. The people he introduced us to, as well as what he taught us is the reason our show has lasted this long. Although we are no under his guidance, he will always be a major part of our story.
Has it been a smooth road?
Our time at the station where we started as a radio show started off smoothly. We had a 3-hour weekly time slot on Thursdays from 7 to 10 pm. Our content was very raw, real, and shady. Most of the shows on the station were geared towards local hip hop artists. While we enjoy the artists that Houston offers, our content was specific to our audience. We immediately stood out to the station’s current listeners, while also bringing in a completely different demographic. This should have been a win-win situation for everyone, but the owner of the station began to censor the show. He would pop up unexpectedly during interviews and often told us lies in order to control our topics. Eventually, we got to the point that boundaries had to be set and a decision had to be made.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Tea in the Shade Podcast – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Tea in the Shade is a hilariously uncensored blog and podcast that discusses all things pop culture. It is hosted by two foul-mouthed Southern belles, Kira “Petty Kash” Davis of Shreveport, LA and Naeishia “Shadee Nae” Nance of Port Arthur, TX.
We are known for being brutally honest with our opinions. Every week we send shady, but much needed prayers to celebrities that participate in mayhem and confusion. We also recap reality shows, discuss serious world issues/politics, and provide guidance in our listener letters segment.
Over the last six years of this journey, there are many things that we are proud of. After leaving our first radio station, we started our own internet radio station with three other women. With that station we were able to provide a platform to others that had the same goals and dreams without stifling their personalities or content. We’ve had amazing interviews with reality stars that we see on tv, Instagram comedians, and Houston artists. We started our own merch shop that features items with our popular catch phrases and quotes. We recently had our first live show at Mediatech Institute where we sold out within two weeks of opening ticket sales.
One of the main things that sets us apart from other podcasts is how easily our conversation flows. Listeners frequently tell us that they can hear how genuine our friendship and love for each other really is. Also, we share the same zodiac sign (#TeamCancer) which is the base of our connection that gives us twin-like powers. We are also very open and honest with the opinions that we share, even when we discuss our own personal struggles.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Houston is a large city full of opportunities no matter what industry you are in. There are lots of different people and cultures to learn from. It is our second home and the place where we have been able to chase our dreams and put many things into fruition. Can we also say that we love the food trucks?
What do we like least? THE TRAFFIC. Periodt.
