Today we’d like to introduce you to Kisha Nash.
Kisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story started in high school I registered for the cosmetology program in the 11th grade. I graduated with a cosmetology license and went on to be a hairstylist and also learned how to cut men’s hair. I wasn’t too fond of the styling women part of the hair industry so I began to focus mainly on haircutting.
For 13 years, I worked as a stylist cutting men. So in 2013 decided to go to barber school to further my education in barbering. One of my loyal clients would always tell how good I was and that I should go to barber school. He thought I was so good that he sponsored me and paid for my tuition to attend Acres Homes Barber College. I completed my hours but didn’t take the state exam right away. I waited for a little over a year before I actually took the test. I was procrastinating.
At the end of 2015, I told myself that I wouldn’t let another year go by without taking my test. I took the state exam December 2015 and aced it! I continued to work as a stylist at my then current job, and then one day asked my myself why are you here? When you could be working for yourself. So I reached out to a local barbershop to work so I could start building my clientele to prepare myself to go on open my own shop. I worked there for about a year and a half and then branched out on my own.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth at all but it’s all worth the struggles. Sometimes I feel that being a female barber is one of my struggles because some men are just not use to a women performing barbering services on them. I think it’s like half and half. 50% of men would like to have a woman barber and the other 50% wouldn’t. Also, Trying not to get too comfortable. Staying consistent with promoting my brand has been a struggle.
Please tell us about Groomed Men’s Salon.
What sets me apart from most barbers is that I’m a female barber. I hear people say, “you don’t see a lot of women barbers that do what you’re doing and good at it.” If some of the guys are skeptical about women barbers, I like to think that when. They leave, I’ve changed their minds. When my clients come inside my shop, I want them to have an EXPERIENCE! My goal is to make them feel comfortable so they can have a nice satisfying experience.
