Meet Krissy Sexton of The Hair Bow Company

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krissy Sexton.

Hi Krissy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2008, after an unsuccessful last minute search around our hometown for a white hair bow and oh so trendy at the time crochet headband for my daughter’s 1st birthday photoshoot; I landed at hobby lobby to purchase a spool of ribbon and barrettes to make my own bow. After realizing how hard it was to find one locally, I went on-line to place an order for other bows & headbands I was needing and saw a need for a website to purchase bows, flower clips and crochet headbands at reasonable prices. I started the business with a $500 investment selling crochet clips and handmade flower clips on e-bay from my house. Regular customers repeatedly were asking me to create a website and in 2008, we launched thehairbowcompany.com. As we continued to expand our color selections, sizes and styles over the years, we have loved watching the trends and styles progress. We moved into our first warehouse in 2009 in Pearland, TX and before long, we were occupying an entire 2nd warehouse in that space. In 2014, we consolidated and moved to a larger warehouse space in Pearland. And in 2019, we moved from Pearland to League City, TX where we currently are located.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all, but every challenge has shaped who we are today. Running an online business is anything but predictable. Some days you come in and fix printers, other days you come in and feel like you are conquering the world. One of the biggest hurdles faced has definitely been keeping up with the constantly changing buying patterns. We’ve had to continuously figure out how to adapt to new social media algorithms, keep up with emerging platforms like Instagram and most recently TikTok, and maintain positive user experience as people have transitioned buying primarily from desktop to mobile. Keeping up with new technologies is also critical & AI is definitely at the forefront of this at the moment.

On the creative side, one of the toughest, yet most important tasks has been finding manufacturers overseas I can work with who are not only reliable and trustworthy, but also deliver the high-quality products our customers expect. None of these hurdles have been easy, but each one has taught valuable lessons and pushed us to become more innovative, adaptable, and resilient.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Hair Bow Company is all about celebrating childhood. What started as a small, 2 product e-bay business has grown into so much more than I could have imagined. What sets us apart is the heart behind everything we do. We believe that looking cute shouldn’t come with a hefty price tag, so we focus on creating on-trend, affordable designs.

By listening to our customers and coming up with new styles, we have been able to successfully serve customers since 2007. We are so thankful to be a part of those every day moments as well as special occasion memories. One of our favorite things that we absolutely LOVE is seeing our customer’s photos in action.

One things we are especially proud of is remaining evergreen in the face of a constantly changing market. We’ve added product lines, and most recently in the past few years, custom bows to our growing list of offerings. We have had the opportunity to work with people from across the country. We’ve collaborate with districts, cheer and dance coaches, PTA’s/PTO’s and individuals to create custom hair bows that showcase their individualities. It’s an extension of our mission to spread joy and build community — because when kids feel confident of themselves, it shows.

At the end of the day, The Hair Bow Company is more than just bows and clothes. We’re here to help families make memories, and celebrate milestones.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I absolutely love the energy of Houstonians – the “be someone” culture truly inspires everyone here to dream bigger.

If I had to pick something that is not my favorite, it would definitely be never ending I-45 construction.
