Meet Kristin Schuster of Inflection Architecture

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristin Schuster

Hi Kristin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2018 I launched Inflection Architecture aftermoving into the home I designed for my own family. On a basic level, the design process involves helping people make a million little decisions that will add up in big ways to influence the course of their lives. I realized there are clients I wouldn’t be able to serve if I chose to stay with the old firm. Good architecture improves lives, and I named the firm to keep that principle first and foremost.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve been very fortunate to have fantastic opportunities over the past 6 years. I’ve built a practice and portfolio I’m quite proud of around those, and have come to know and work with many wonderful people – clients as well as team members.

Last April I was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. You can imagine some of the challenges and changes that brought as I went through treatment. That was a wallop in so many ways. I’m incredibly grateful to be in complete remission now and feeling strong again. As a small business owner, to be able to go through – and come through – that … has shown me that there probably isn’t any business challenge I can’t navigate. We have wonderful clients and projects on the boards; and are excited to have a project on an upcoming architecture tour and another being written about for a national design publication. 2025 is going to be such a good year.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We’re recognized for creating thoughtful and creative (and award-winning!) designs that reflect and support our clients’ lives and missions. While our work is contemporary, the most visible things about our portfolio are the diversity of stylistic expression and the humility and joy in the design. That is because we work to amplify each client’s voice rather than our own.

We begin our process in a slightly unusual way, by learning our clients. Whether we are working with a family or a non-profit, we start with an extensive questionnaire that allows us to start a conversation where we can listen beyond spatial needs to learn how we can best support their values and relationships.

I’m most proud of our relationships and the beautiful things we are able to build through them. I feel lucky to be able to do what we do. Thank you for the chance to talk about it!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’m a reader and the books are piled high! At the top of the heap right now are books about the lives and work of several notable architects, including Louis Kahn, Alvar Aalto, and Joseph and Annie Albers.
