Meet Kristy Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Jones.

Kristy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story still amazes me… Never in a million years would I have guessed I’d be owning and operating a cake business for going on four years. I always dreamed and visioned myself owning and opening a bar of some sort. I bartended for 10-plus years and fell in love instantly with it. However I’ve always had a creative side, I love designing and hand drawing. So when I made my first cake- (Ninja turtle) I had no clue what I was doing but visually I knew I could recreate what I was looking at, I just needed the fundamentals lol. So I studied YouTube and I googled videos, I researched materials and I ran with it. Unknowingly the cake went semi-viral and I started getting inquiries regarding cake orders, again at the time I didn’t know what the going rate was for an average custom cake and I literally still didn’t know what exactly I was doing so most of my cakes were basically free, I made just enough to cover supplies. When I made my second cake – I knew I was on to something so that’s when I started taking it more seriously and I prayed and asked the lord “if this is for me, show me” and per usual he answered. Everything behind my cakes is self-taught- I learn from trial and error, feedback, advice and still to this day good old YouTube and Google, lol.

I completely walk by faith and create art using cakes. I left the bar scene and I’ve been full-time making cakes for over two years now.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say this journey has been smooth but I will say it’s definitely been worth it. I’m hard on myself when I make a mistake or I can not seem to grasp the concept behind something. Cake making certainly has its moments were I question myself “is this it”? But that’s my passion pouring out, my perfectionist side. And once I’ve accepted my error or mistake – I’m back studying and figuring out my weakness so I can overcome it. I’m a rebel at heart- rebels can’t be defeated. Most people think the hardest part is working with people but honestly, the hardest part is making sure your brand is pure and solid, fresh and different.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Again in my hometown, I went from being known for flipping bottles and making your favorite drinks… creating a vibe and helping you relax and unwind But now lol everyone calls me KrissyCakes, lol.

Cakes is my passion but not my brand – KrissyCakes is so much more than cakes. I love my city, I try my best to give back and pour love into every chance I get. I host holiday drives and school events. I partner with local charities and hospitals. I donate birthday cakes to children with terminal diseases. I host business expos to create a space for all local businesses to have a platform to shine and showcase their talents. My city is my joy! They bred Krissycakes and I’ll forever be indebted

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t quit, Don’t walk, Don’t look back! Do it, do it your way, and do it on your time BUT DO IT! Pray, pray every day, pray hard! Stay humble and keep an open reflective mindset! Stay gracious and remain grateful
