Meet Krystal Aziz of Modern Travelworks in Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Aziz.

Krystal, before we jump into specific questions about the company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The next time you visit a famous tourist spot, look around. Put your phone down and look around. Take a moment to observe the facial expressions of all the people around you, everyone from different parts of the world, but experiencing the same feeling in this one location together. That feeling is fascinating. My name is Krystal Aziz & I am fascinated by this world.

I am blessed to have an amazing father that works for United Airlines since I was born and opened the gates for me to fly to China, Japan, Cambodia, Dominican Republic, Hawaii & many other places but always on a budget. We never stayed in fancy hotels or even ate at fancy places. Still, we traveled because he wanted us to be exposed to different cultures, to appreciate others & to learn the history behind each destination. We didn’t have a lot of money to spend on tours, so my dad would rent a car & either my sister, or I would sit in the front seat and navigate looking at a map or several maps of that city to drive ourselves to the places we wanted to see. My love for packing a bag & flying standby on any open flight that we could get on & just figuring it out as we got there began at that moment. I continued to travel through high school, college & even had the opportunity to study abroad in Dubai.

Traveling was the only thing I knew that completely filled my heart with pure happiness, so when I graduated college with a Marketing degree in 2016, I had no idea what industry I wanted to get into. Still, I knew it had to involve traveling. I had a few friends working for Modern Vacations & Modern Destination Weddings (Now rebranded to Modern Travelworks) at the time they arranged an interview with the owner, Tim Evans. I never really thought about being a Travel Agent because, honestly, as a millennial, I didn’t know anyone that used an agency to book their trips. But Tim sold me on the company, the job, the culture, & that I would experience LUXURY traveling.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think being half the age of most people in this industry (25 years old) causes people to either be completely interested in you or might question your skills. The easiest way I have overcome any questions about why I am in the industry is that I tell them to travel is in my blood: 30 countries down, 165 more to go.

We’d love to hear more about the company.
As an agent, you oversee the creation of someone’s fantasy trip or their dream wedding. Something they probably have thought about for many years but now was in your hands. I loved every moment of it. The job was to excite someone about a new adventure they would embark on, no matter the reason for traveling. I broke a few company sales records in my first year but would still ask myself, how can I improve this? How did I reach this success, and how can I share it with my team? The thing about me is, I will never do my job. I wanted to learn everything I could about the company and the industry. I want to be apart of revolutionizing this industry with technology, young minds & inspiration.

Three years in the industry, and I am part of the team that oversees all the weddings that come through Modern Travelworks. Work to develop any new contracts with wholesalers in the industry and, of course, TRAVEL THE WORLD! But the most exciting part now has the opportunity to lead our Host & Independent Contractor Department, which will expand the company across the United States.

The thing I love about ModernTravelworks is that we are a young, energetic & innovative company in what people would call an old school industry. We are bringing podcasting, social media influence, and so much more to grasp the attention of more people to inspire them to travel. In this industry, I am known as the youngest person in the room, more than likely mistaken as someone’s child, depending on who is standing next to me lol. I am also known as the hardest worker in the room, I am determined to leave my mark, and nothing is going to stop me.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me, success is knocking down the places I keep on my bucket list. In my head, I create these moments I want to experience, from riding a hot air balloon in New Mexico to waking up in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora. Unlike most people, I try to expedite how quickly I can knock things off that list. I refuse to wait until I am “rich” or “retired” because time is not guaranteed. And when I experience these moments that I have on my list, I take a second to soak it all in & remember how I got to that moment.
