Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Soliz.
Krystal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started doing hair and make-up early. During high school, I would wake up extra early, wash my hair, and do what I would call “round brush my hair” which is now commonly known as a blowout. I would do this every day for school. I started getting into make up after graduating high school. Going out on the weekends, I started putting more effort in my makeup. Effort to the point where my friends and family would eventually start asking me if I could apply their make up before a party or a night out. I decided to go a different route with my education enrolling in school to become a Pharmacy Technician, but the passion for hair and makeup was subconsciously growing inside of me. After graduating from college, I started fiddling with the idea of pursuing my passion. Being a shy person, it took several years to develop the courage to put myself in a position where I would interact with new people every day. SCREW IT!! I’m going for it!! I enrolled in Paul Mitchell The School Houston and that was my official starting point to pursuing my passion. I was going to school while still trying to maintain a job and a home life. After completing my 1500 hours and earning my cosmetology license, I began to do a lot of freelance work. From hair color to full face make up, I was bouncing from client to client trying to make a name for myself. I eventually ended up turning a small restroom in my mother’s then business into a “studio”. Removed the toilet, installed a hair sink, added a mirror and just like that I had something to call my own. Doing hair when my mother’s business was closed for the day. I started freelancing with a well-known makeup artist doing wedding makeup and hair. She took me under her wing and showed me the ins and outs on this profession. I was eventually offered a job at a blow dry and make up bar. I worked there for a year becoming their top stylist, makeup artist and top sales person. During my time, there I was presented with an opportunity to partner in a full-service salon. An opportunity that I couldn’t pass up. After a year there, my partnership was dissolved and I was back on the freelance market. I quickly found a chair available in Sola Salons and started planting roots there. That is where I am currently located. I am constantly putting myself out there and hoping that my clients feel their best when they get out of my chair. All of this from a shy simple girl choosing to follow her passion.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Far from a smooth road. Financially getting the equipment and supplies needed was hard. During my schooling, I eventually had to stop working completely and devote my time to caring for my father who was doing dialysis 5 times a week. My husband was the only one working at the time and always supported me in my passion. I have had what I would call “lessons” along the entire way. My dissolved partnership was a hard one to get through. I devoted an entire year of my life Sunday through Saturday to that business. Eventually the best choice for me was to cut my losses and start over. Currently, I struggle with the challenge of marketing. I am constantly trying to find new ways to market myself and stand out from the other great makeup artists in Houston.
Please tell us about Hair & Beauty Studio.
I’m an independent stylist that offers a full-service salon experience such as color, cuts, styling, Brazilian blowouts, makeup and other services. I specialize in bridal hair and makeup. I am most commonly known for my soft natural make up along with great customer service. I am proud that as an Independent stylist I continue to grow and learn new techniques and that I adapt to the new trends. I have to say my customer service sets me apart from others. My clients return because of the quality of work and the attention that I give them individually.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Family gatherings. I loved when everyone would come over to my house and play music, BBQ, and just enjoy each other’s company.
