Meet Kyle Luce

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Luce.

Kyle, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Graduated high school in 2013 and did what I was encouraged and what I thought I was supposed to do which was attend college. In my first semester at Lone Star College, I switched my major from kinesiology to business, then decided through whatever strange thought process that I wanted to go to school for music (producing), so I changed majors again and transferred to San Jac. After blowing off that semester and hardly attending my classes, I decided to take a job offer in Austin TX to work at a warehouse. After quickly being promoted, I found myself losing my identity and hanging with the wrong crowd. Moving back to Houston in late 2014, I struggled to keep a job, I kept losing interest and wanting to do different things, but I remember not having the time to discover my passions. One day, after yet another denied job interview, I headed to a friend, he mentioned my interview outfit was pretty cool, so he insisted he may as well practice his photography as I modeled the best I could. This friend’s name was Jon Mcconnell of Cinescope Creative. Midway through the photo session, I caught a reflection of myself in the lens and asked: “what if you taught me photography?” He started teaching me the basics the very next day, as I practiced shooting on an old mustang parked outside of a 1940s building in old downtown Humble. From then on, I just learned everything I could and still learning till this day, I now have credentials or online publishing’s with Forever21, Akoo, Topman, Daya by Zendaya, and have collaborated with many brands like As I Am, Unkle Funky’s Daughter and Jameson. Being able to capture a moment in time with my photography and describe in great detail without saying a word is amazing to me, and with telling a story using cinematography and having creative control to tell others stories and bring them to life is a feeling I can never be thankful enough for.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
ABSOLUTELY NOT! A lot of people see entrepreneurs and see the “freedom” which you do have but in order to have that same freedom, there are a lot of sacrifices to be made. My biggest was budgeting! I am horrible at it especially when I first started, I was too stubborn to work a 9-5 and do my visuals. I wanted what I saw on social media and at the time didn’t exactly understand what it meant to get there.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Luce Visuals – what should we know?
I started my company Luce Visuals in 2015. I guess you could say I specialize in lifestyle/fashion photography and video commercial promotions.

I am most proud of just keeping my head above water, not letting the material aspects affect my creativity. The part where you get paid for pursuing your passion is just a bonus.

I’m proud that I’ve been recognized for my work as well when your art speaks and people can tell you that it’s an amazing feeling.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The best part of the city is our diversity! Literally, you can be walking down the street and meet someone from across the world and really dig into each other’s ethnicity and learn so many different cultures.

The worst part about the city is the traffic that (no pun intended) drives everyone crazy.
