Meet Lakeia Jackson of The Braid Cave in Southeast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lakeia Jackson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Lakeia. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Hi everyone, I am LaKeia Jackson, age 30. Everybody knows me as Keke or Ke. Born and Raised in Houston, TX. I’m a mother of Three Beautiful children as well as a Devoted Wife. At one point, I was just a stay at home wife. As my children got older, my youngest baby was able to go to school. I had to find me something that loved and was comfortable doing. I always had a passion for hair BRAIDS to be exact. I’ve been doing braids since I was 11 years old, including my own hair. After my husband and a couple of friends was telling me to go ahead and start. I went ahead and stepped out on faith posted my first Facebook post advertising my braids & specials. I also started mobile taking risk by going to other people’s homes that I’ve never met before. Thereafter, I had to call it quits and started doing hair from home. I enjoyed doing hair from home. It was very convenient for me having to take my kids with me most of the time, and also taking another risk by letting unknown customers into my home with my family. I felt pretty safe with the ones that I did allow in. As traffic picked up I had to shut my home town it was becoming too much! I would be up from sun up to sun down Doing hair, After that, I came to a conclusion that I had to find another space and get my business more organized especially with my time I was literally all over the place. A good friend of mine told me about her aunt’s shop that she had opened. So, I slept on it talked to my husband about it for a couple of days, and in June 2018, I was moving out my home into a shop. I was Ecstatic that was a big step for me, it was out of my comfort zone being that I was used to being to myself, but here I am. A year later, business is Flowing and growing. I have my very own edge control out now called “EDGE LAYER” by Ke for My natural customers. I sit and think about how far I’ve come in 3years; It’s truly amazing. I’m so proud of myself.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
So far, this journey for me has been wonderful. I treat My clients like how I would want to be treated, with love and respect, and I get that in return, from each one of them. The challenge for me was staying consistent & focused. Some days I feel like I’m over it. Standing and doing hair all day from 8-5. Every day can be tiring and a little overwhelming, but that voice in the back of my head tells me “you got this keep going” and I did just that and not letting anything around me Distract me from my purpose and where I want to be in life.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Braid Cave story. Tell us more about the business.
I specialized in BRAIDS, the in the beginning I catered more to Little girls hair. Those styles led me to looking into different styles like “Feed-in Braids.” They were hot in 2016. I was so Determined to learn the technique I kept Going till I Got it! However, I wasn’t stopping there. I decided to take on another challenge for myself, which was BOX BRAIDS. They take quite some time for one person. The process is at least Eight hours. My Goal was Four to Five hours max. My timing & speed is perfect. I love my clients, especially the ones who’s been there since day one. They also Love that I’m quick, convenient, and my work is always neat. They always show me genuine love and Support; we’re like Family.
