Meet LaKendria Ellis of Ken Kounsels in Galleria

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaKendria Ellis.

LaKendria, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My name is LaKendria Ellis, owner and CEO of Ken Kounsels, Kounseling that Kares. I started my journey to be a therapist before I even knew there was a profession for it. I grew up an only child, so I naturally watched and observed the interactions between people. I have always been very in tune with emotions and the “why” behind the person. I attended The University of Texas at San Antonio, where I studied biology and psychology. I initially wanted to become a psychiatrist; however, that was not my calling. I participated in an internship opportunity with Adult Protection Services, shadowing a psychiatrist. I realized during that internship that there were many adults suffering as a result of the trauma from their past. Psychiatry was an excellent tool for medication management, but there was no real work to assist in getting to the root issue, the why.

After my undergraduate studies, while figuring out my career path, I became a teacher. It was in that profession, teaching that I realized the need for therapy and uncovered who I wanted to become. As an educator, I realized that there was more that needed to be implemented in the school system, more than education. I worked in a title one school. I served a population of students who were victims of family violence, poverty, and traumatic circumstances. I watched as their whole person was essentially ignored and I wanted to be the one to help. Education is a powerful tool, but it means nothing if your mental health cannot withstand it. I eventually went back to school to obtain my masters to become a therapist.

During my studies, I was able to uncover some issues of my own that needed healing. I then began the process of healing myself as well as others. I started off working for an agency, but I wanted to create a sacred space to assist in the healing of my clients. I’m big into health and fitness, so I began advertising through my gym with Mental health Monday videos and quick tips on things I use in therapy on Wednesday. I post my videos and practice the art of consistency. Ken Kounsels was really a vision from God and I’m allowing him to take me wherever he sees fit. I’m excited about the journey and the opportunity to help others heal.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. It has not been a smooth road. The hardest part, for me, was getting started and being vulnerable. Deciding to start your own therapy practice has many potential benefits, but it forces you to believe in yourself and your abilities honestly. You are mostly an expert. Therefore, you have to create your own system for checks and balances. I had to learn to hold myself accountable. I was concerned about how I would be received. I was worried about whether or not the practice would be successful. I was uncertain about how to advertise to potential clients. I was unsure if my messages would translate to an audience. Uncertainty was a big issue for me. I also struggle with the idea of perfectionism, which is something I had to dismiss quickly. I wanted everything to be perfect before I “launched.” This was a huge setback.

Please tell us about your practice.
I am a psychotherapist, professional speaker, educator and mental health advocate. I provide therapy to individuals, couples, and families. I also look forward to starting small groups for young girls soon. I participate in panel discussions and provide psychoeducation to companies on the importance of prioritizing mental health in the workplace while giving practical tips on how to do so. I specialize in treating anxiety, depression and trauma in adults and teenagers.

I am most proud of the fact that I started my company; most people are too scared to get that far. I also pride myself on creating a safe space in which others feel comfortable. I am proud that people trust me in being a part of their healing. Being a therapist is truly a gift. I am beyond grateful to be able to serve in this capacity.

My educational background sets me apart, along with my personal and professional experience. Pyscho-education is very important to me and a constant in my practice. I like to educate my clients while creating a safe space to conduct therapy. I have had the opportunity to work in very intense settings, serving those who have had a chronic mental illness. The knowledge that I gained while in those positions has definitely sharpened my skill set. I have seen a therapist myself. With my experience in going to therapy, I am able to understand the vulnerability that goes along with sitting on the other side of the couch. I understand both sides of the spectrum.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Consistency, self-care and self-awareness. I have to be consistent in promotion, videos, and content. I also have to be consistent in my energy and performance. Self-care, I can’t pour from an empty cup; therefore, for me to be effective, I have to take care of my health. (mentally, physically, and spiritually). Self-awareness: I have to be aware of what is going on with me so that I am truly in tune with the client. I have to ensure they are safe in my care.
