Today we’d like to introduce you to LaShonda Myers.
LaShonda, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
After launching as a mobile waxing business in October 2019, The Wax Assassins opened the doors to its very own waxing suite February 1, 2020. Starting off as a mobile waxing studio had its pros and cons but helped to gain people’s attention just a bit easier. Why not get waxed in the comfort of your own home? Yet, my clientele started to increase and I knew that I needed a more solid foundation to provide my clients with the best experience all the way around. Now, finding a location should have been the easy part as there are a ton of office buildings, storefront spaces, and salon suite rentals here in Houston. That was not the case as I was looking for the perfect place that would be beneficial to everyone. Location, size, price, security, management and neighbors were all non-negotiables on my list in searching for my location. While my business was actually not supposed to be strictly mobile waxing starting off, it gave me time to work out a lot of kinks with booking, payment and price structures, inventory and so forth. That helped with how I operate my business now.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road as some may think. When I first started looking into salon suites or office spaces, I thought several times that I had found the perfect location. Even when as far as putting in the application and was approved for the space. Yet, when it was time to exchange funds, management changed again. It had already changed during the application process and it just became a big no for me. Funny thing was, it left me with 1,000 business cards that had a space that I would not be using. So, I had to go back to my list to continue to look for spaces.
There were spaces that were too small or spaces that were priced too high. I was like Goldilocks and the Three Bears looking for that just right space. I eventually found my studio as it was still under construction and was able to view it that day. Everything about the space was what I was looking for and I knew that I had found my “just right”. The struggles didn’t stop there. There were issues with getting the address validated for Google, Apple Maps, Yelp and so forth since it was so new. Then there were issues with getting inventory shipped, so everything had to be routed to my home address. Moving in was somewhat of a hassle because I had to pack everything into my car and make a few trips.
Now, here it is almost two months in and we are facing another hassle. COVID- 19 or the coronavirus has caused for non-essential business to close down to protect everyone and prevent the spread of the disease as much as possible. While there isn’t a set date on when I’ll be able to reopen my studio, I know that this is just another small bump to get over.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t say luck. I would say prayer. The role that prayer and faith has played in my business has allowed for me to go through the struggles and know that there is a silver lining. Everything would be alright in the end if you keep putting in the work and not give up. Luck has nothing to do with it. Prayer and faith does work.
