Today we’d like to introduce you to Latia Hickerson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I knew at an early age that I wanted to work in women’s health. When I was nine, my cousin allowed me to be present during the birth of her son and that was a life-changing moment for me! I originally wanted to become an OB/GYN, but later found that becoming a women’s health nurse practitioner was a better fit for me.
After completing my undergraduate education with a Bachelors of Science in Health Education at the University of Florida, I completed a Post-Bach program in nursing at Columbia University. I went on to obtain my Masters in Nursing, as well as my Masters in Public Health,at the University of Texas – Houston. As a Robert Wood Johnson Future of Nursing Scholar, I completed my Doctorate in 2017. Before starting my own practice, I’ve worked in a variety of community health settings. I’ve done a lot of work providing prenatal care to pregnant teenagers, while also teaching them life skills, which has been a true highlight in my career. Working as a nurse in the field of public health helped me to see health and wellness through a more comprehensive lens, which prompted me to study more holistic and integrative models of health. Now, I have the honor of offering women holistic and integrative options for their gynecologic, lactation, and women’s healthcare needs.
Has it been a smooth road?
There have definitely been a few character building moments along the way. My mom, who is INCREDIBLE, survived both breast and colon cancer during my years in nursing school. Also along my journey, I met my now husband and birthed two handsome sons, one born during my doctoral training and the second a few months after opening the clinic, so I’ve definitely had to learn work-life balance, which is definitely an ongoing lesson. Starting a business requires lots of hard work and tenacity, and I found myself working so hard to help everyone else on their journey towards wellness that I wasn’t feeling well. I was always tired and fatigued, had tons of brain fog, and wasn’t feeling very motivated. It was almost like I had become my own patient! This really helped me to better understand t
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I created Agrarian Wellness and Latched in 2017 and opened my practice in 2018. The term Agrarian means to cultivate the land and my goal is to cultivate health and wellness. As an integrative provider, I combine traditional Western medicine with evidence-based holistic approaches in order to help promote wellness. I offer traditional services, such as annual well-woman exams, Pap smears, birth control management, STD checks and evaluate gynecologic problems. My integrative services include implementing modalities to promote thyroid healing, gut healing, hormone balancing, and womb healing for fibroids, PCOS, and period problems. I offer nutritional assessments and specialized testing to help women find the root causes of their ailments and partner with them to create personalized plans of care that use nutrition, exercise, stress management and spirituality to return their bodies to a state of wellness. I also offer preconception counseling, holistic pregnancy consultations and lactation consultations to help women maximize their health prior to pregnancy, during pregnancy, and in the postpartum periods. Most services can even be offered virtually, using telemedicine. So patients. don’t have to travel to Clear Lake!
What sets Agrarian Wellness apart is that it is not a traditional or typical gynecology practice. Creating a sense of community and forming true relationships with my clients is extremely important to me. As a result, I keep the practice small and appointment time is spent with me the entire visit so that clients are not rushed and have time to connect with me as their provider. I also love that we offer unconventional services such as praise dance classes, group educational visits, cooking demonstrations, book clubs, healthy living workshops, and prayer all in attempts to support women on their journeys towards wellness!
If you had to start over, what would you have done differently?
If I had to start over, I can’t say that I would have done anything differently. I truly feel that every experience in life is a learning opportunity and I have embraced each of my opportunities to learn and grow. Of the many lessons I have encountered, I have learned to trust the vision and dream that God has given me and to remember that He has equipped me with the tools that I need to do the job to which I am purposed to complete.
