Today we’d like to introduce you to LaTrina Williams.
LaTrina, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born and raised in the small city of Lufkin, Texas. My mother and my sister were neighborhood stylists so I picked up that skill naturally. I grew up doing hair from 9th grade to my mid-twenties. Wanting something different from the long salon hours, I moved to Houston about seven years ago to pursue massage therapy. All those years of shampooing hair and the satisfaction it gave my clients lead me here. “You should really do massage!” I’d hear it constantly. While doing research, I realized massage therapy courses were not offered in Lufkin. Houston was the place to be.
Has it been a smooth road?
There were many times during school, I felt like this may not be the path for me. With a bucket for a car, I’d drive from Lufkin to Houston for six months straight. Id work at my sister’s business, Ideas Beauty Salon, during the day and I took night classes in Houston at Texas Center for Massage Therapy. This was both mentally and physically draining for me so I often doubted if I was doing the right thing. Sometimes life makes us uncomfortable when a great shift is happening. Things may look bleak. Things may seem unattainable. Don’t give up. The universe constantly reminds me that I’m in the right place. The people I meet and the opportunities given to me solidifies it.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I have experience working in spa, corporate, medical, and sports settings. I specialize in Deep Tissue, Sports, and Myofascial therapies. When I’m working with a client, the sessions are catered for their needs. Listening to their situation and educating them about what route to take and, if necessary refer them to who can help. It really takes a village! Watching my business grow over the years is what makes me proud. I am the massage therapist for Shell Energy Trade Center and NRG Energy in downtown Houston and Rice University. About a year ago, I opened my own private space in Uptown Houston near Memorial Park. Im also the therapist for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) in their Houston tournament going on my second year this year.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is a wonderful city to start a business! I’m from a small city so the opportunities are far few than Houston. Not to say that it’s a piece of cake. It takes time and work to build and grow, but the audience is massive! Ive had the chance to meet so many different people and I’m happy I moved here to start my business.
