Meet Laura Villafani of LVS Custom Cakes & Cookies in Humble

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Villafani.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Laura. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My life as an artist began at a very young age. As I recall, my mother said that I was born with a pencil in my hand. All I did throughout my life was draw, paint and create art. I attended many craft classes and the more classes I attended, the more I fell in love with art. My father wanted me to study Journalism, but I wanted Art. So, I followed my heart and pursued a life of art. It’s been quite a while since those times.

Right now, I still do art, but in a different way. I make cakes and cookies look good! A cake is not a cake, a cake for me is a canvas. There is so much you can do to a cake to make it look like a work of art. You can make it look beautiful, elegant, cute, scary, conventional, abstract, modern, etc. The possibilities are endless. But, the most important of it all is the reaction you get when the cake is revealed. That is the key moment. You can get smiles, you can get tears of joy, you can get applause, always a new reaction of awe when they see the cake. And the same goes with cookies. That little 3″x3″ or 4″x4″ piece of canvas makes so many individuals smile. A party is not a party without a cake. It is the center of attention, it is the most important element in an event.

And also, it is just not looks only. As I have traveled around the globe I am a foodie as well. I like to taste the different foods served around the world. Taste is important. So I learn everyday on how to make my cakes taste good and look good at the same time. And I so enjoy the creative process that goes into when creating a custom cake. That is where my Graphic Design comes in. Graduated from University of Northern Colorado and it was the best decision I made.

Has it been a smooth road?
I hasn’t been a smooth road, it still isn’t. First of all, I am by myself and I still work from my house. I am the one designing, I am the one going to get materials, I am the one preparing, I am the one baking, I am the one cleaning and I am the one decorating. There are only 24 hours in the day. It is tough. And I also have a family to take care of. I also have to turn away some orders due to the fact that I dont have help or the right place.I know the time will come where the right place and finding the right help will come. In the meantime, I am trying to develop new ways to share this passion with others. Time will tell.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with LVS Custom Cakes & Cookies – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
LVS started as way to spend time in the kitchen decorating cookies. Today, LVS is a different version of what it started for. LVS is creating works of art with sugar. Works of art for individuals to admire and celebrate. LVS loves creating custom cakes. I do not like copy cakes. I like to design, create and deliver a unique piece of art. Cakes come in different ways, I want to make them special and unique for events. There is something about a custom cake. The cake has to connect with the celebrant and their family. The cake has to tell a story. The cake has to be the center of attention. Even though it takes many hours to design a cake and make it. The satisfaction of the end result is just incredible. This is where I show who I am. And I love to make people happy. Cookies have become second on the scale as I discovered that cakes bring so much happiness. Just creating the toppers, the base.

What sets me apart… there are so many incredible cake artists. I have met many. I have taken classes from many that you see in the Foodnetwork channel. It is the learning, the constant wanting to get better at what I do. Many hours spent in front of the computer, the investment to become a better artist, a better person. And my biggest accomplishment is that I have been able to help many in my community. There is so much help needed in our city, and I am still looking for ways to help as many people as I can.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Houston, what an amazing city it is. Houston, the city where you can find so many different cultures living together. A city where individuals feel welcome, feel at home. A city that lives all day. So many choices of restaurants that you don’t have to eat the same thing every weekend. Young people invading the night scene. The museums, the restaurants, the medical center, downtown and of course our awesome Football, Soccer, and Baseball teams! The spirit of their fans… like no other. The annual Rodeo. I have been volunteering there for a few years and it is an event that makes Houston stand out. There are many things that makes Houston an incredible city. Yes, the traffic. Traffic in Houston is bad. I can’t say I like it but I have to live with it. But, at the end of the day, Houston is the place to be, where neighbors help each other in adversity and all.
