Meet Lauren Jefferson of FocusCopy®

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Jefferson.

Lauren Jefferson

Hi Lauren, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I never knew I wanted to work in marketing until one of my entrepreneurship professors, Jim Wilkinson, hired me as his marketing intern. But it was much more than marketing. I “owned” the digital side of his business – everything from product development, website development, SEO, email marketing, blogging, social media, sales, customer service, and more. The #1 thing I learned is that without good copy in all of those roles…you will not be successful. So I started researching copywriting. Long story short, I became the Director of Marketing and eventually helped transition the company through Jim’s unexpected death into a company acquisition.

In July 2019, my dad presented me with a business plan he’d worked on for 2 years – a copywriting business. I took one look at it, and 20 days later, FocusCopy was born.

In the almost 5 years we’ve been in business, we’ve worked with the most incredible entrepreneurs, leaders, and people. We couldn’t have made it this far without great copy and an even better network of strategic partners and supporters.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Entrepreneurship is not a linear pathway. There are always bumps, challenges, resets, and reroutes. Any entrepreneur who tells you otherwise is a liar.

As a business owner, I’ve had to learn how to navigate a pandemic. This included maintaining my existing client base, finding new business, and refusing to let external forces shut the company down.

I also had to find balance by implementing processes and systems. Because of my perfectionist and control freak tendencies, it took me a while to learn how to trust what I had built. As a result, it took me 9+ months to recover from burnout. A lot of productivity was lost because I would not let go.

When AI entered the picture, it tested our business and its perceived value. We publicly spoke on how/when to use AI and how human copywriting is still valuable and profitable for businesses to invest in.

Most recently, I dug deep as I gained the new title of “mom”. What did I want for my business? For my life? For my family? And my child? My maternity leave offered me space to reinvent FocusCopy to be more sustainable and profitable. Now, we have built out 2 other offers that feed into copywriting:

1. Technology. We became a Keap Certified Partner to deliver business automation and sales organization. This tool also helps us to do more email marketing with clients.
2. Systems. We’ve productized our copywriting systems for the DIYers who want to write their own copy or utilize AI to write it for them – all without going off brand.

What matters most to you? Why?
The one thing I don’t like about the term “work-life balance” is that it assumes that work and life are separate. But you only have one life. And it matters what you do with it.

For my team, I want to build a company that permits them to live with balance and excitement. They reach their goals and feel supported in doing so.

For my clients, they are building a business where they don’t have the “hit the pavements” to sell 24 hours a day. Their copy sells for them 24/7 and it converts at a higher rate so they can have freedom from their business.

For my family, my desire is to build a more sustainable and profitable company so they can have my undivided attention and love.
