Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Price.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Upon graduating with a degree in Public Relations, I soon realized it wasn’t my calling. I was asked to teach a study skills course and instantly fell in love with teaching and working with students. After that experience, I ended up tutoring, teaching and managing a tutoring company over the next decade.
Inspired by my curiosity to learn more about how to approach students, I went back to school and got my Master’s in Educational Psychology. Throughout my Master’s program, I was introduced to self-regulated learning and realized that it was the missing link for my students. After making this discovery, I developed our program and business based on the principles of self-regulated learning.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think with any new business, there are obstacles and challenges along the way. Our biggest challenge has been most recently expanding into Dallas. Personally, my biggest challenge has been balancing my time with students, with whom I love working and managing the day-to-day operations of the business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Academic Independence is a tutoring firm that works with students from elementary school to adults in all subjects. We also offer a variety of courses primarily with a focus on helping students become independent learners.
Moreover, we provide intensive courses such as ACT/SAT prep, college essay writing, and adult Spanish. We are known for our educational coaching and study skills accountability programs that take a self-regulated approach to all learning. I believe it is this unique approach that sets us apart from others in the industry.
Our method of self-regulated learning helps students set a goal, put them into action, monitor the progress along the way and evaluate what works and what doesn’t. The purpose of our program is for students to develop the internal voice to determine what strategies or actions are most effective to reach their goals. Once a student understands that academic results are based on their strategy use and not simply their abilities, they become more intrinsically motivated.
It empowers the student to go forth and do the work independently. We are not looking for a quick fix for students but a long-term way of approaching their work that will benefit them going forward. Our goal as an organization is to get the student to a point where they no longer need tutors because they have developed the skills to be successful on their own.
I am most proud of our team and the way we tailor tutoring to the individual’s needs taking into consideration the student’s learning style, motivation, current study habits and objectives. Our proudest moment is seeing a student who has become academically independent and no longer requires our services.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Houston has been a great place for Academic Independence. In my experience, a larger city with a variety of schools is an excellent place for a tutoring business.
