Today we’d like to introduce you to Ral Obioha.
Ral, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My parents played a huge role in who I have become today, largely because even though they both lived relatively short lives, they made significant strides in their careers and impacted a host of personal lives during their time here. I still run into people who upon finding out who my parents were, tell me endless tales about the value they added to their lives. That’s the reason why I strongly believe in living a “purpose-driven life.”
I have always been focused. As early as age five, having watched the way my Mom handled a courtroom as a Judge, I knew I wanted to be just like her. I graduated high school at 16 years old, college at 20 years old, law school at 23 years old and obtained a Masters of Law at 24 years old. I didn’t take any breaks because I had no doubt who I wanted to be and where I wanted to go. As early as my freshman year of college, I started interning at law firms, mediation centers, and courts. I knew I wanted to be a lawyer and with that goal in mind, I was always just determined to learn how to be one that touched lives, in a unique way.
After passing the Maryland bar, I worked at a law firm in Washington D.C. for almost five years. I then moved to Houston, took the Texas bar and immediately started a job with a BigLaw firm as a Senior Associate. Despite having a seemingly stable job, I found myself itching to do more, to be more, and to create more opportunities to help people.
In 2016, I finally resigned from my job and took the blind leap of faith to start my own law practice, The Law Office of Ral Obioha, PLLC, popularly known as Ral Obioha Law, where I practice immigration Law, Personal Injury law and Estate Planning. My firm is dedicated to providing efficient legal solutions to individuals and families in Texas and beyond. As a family-oriented law practice, our goal is to provide personalized legal services and results that enrich the lives of our clients.
As a child of immigrants, I understand that the U.S. legal system can often seem daunting and overwhelming to foreigners. That’s why I go the extra mile to make our clients feel secure, comfortable and informed throughout the legal process, and always strive for the best possible outcome. I specifically value open communication lines and strive to simplify the legal process in a way that keeps my clients informed at every step.
I also serve as the Executive Director of Civil Resource Development and Documentation Center (CIRDDOC), an independent, non-governmental and not-for-profit organization established by my parents in 1996 for the protection and promotion of human rights and gender equality in Nigeria and beyond.
In everything I have done, and everything I plan to do, my focus is on enhancing lives through my work. When, at the end of a case, I see the smiles on my clients’ face, it’s all the motivation I need to keep going.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. There are no smooth roads that lead to a place of personal fulfillment. Initially, I struggled with moving from Washington D.C. to Houston, after having gone to school for eight years in the east and having all my family there. Then, I also struggled with resigning my financially secure job here in Houston and making the scary decision to take a leap of faith. I am, however, thankful for the inner zeal to live my purpose. That was all the strength I need to jump right into jumpstarting my law practice, growing it to become what it is today, and planning on a daily basis for its future.
