Meet Layn Chess of Studio Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Layn Chess.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Layn. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I found training as my escape, and my passion, in 2006. I always run after what I’m passionate about and decided to become a full-time trainer in 2009 at a local Heights gym. Shortly after though, my grandfather got very ill and passed away in 2010. I realized the position of his health could have been avoided if he had the right information about how to take care of his body. That’s when my personal mission in life becomes to improve the quality of life longevity for everyone that I meet.

I spent a couple years banging around the Heights area trying to open a gym, and in 2012 I finally landed a location and a business partner, Jose Madrigal. We outgrew that space in about 4 months and moved to our current location which is at 2215 Lawrence, right across the street from the new HEB going in on Shepherd. That location taught us a lot, and we took what we learned and opened our 2nd location in EaDo (East Downtown) in May of this year. It’s been a lot of fun meeting the community and bringing our flavor of Fitness to them.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been like navigating a maze. I say that because sometimes it seems like you’re going backwards, but you’re really making turns that lead to the next opening.

Studio Fitness – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We created Studio Fitness as a place where we could bring together all things “Fitness.” Our facilities offer classes from Yoga to Cycling, Barre to Bootcamps, Barbell to Kettlebell. We even have our own CrossFit affiliate in each location. What sets us apart from the average gym is our people and our programs.

We created our own program called Facet Seven which is our “guidebook” to Complete Fitness. We offer the Facet Seven Method as a class people can come to and not only learn about how to move better, but they get an amazing workout that ends with 5 minutes of Yoga. People are loving it!

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Opening our second location.
