Today we’d like to introduce you to Leighton Dickson.
Leighton, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m originally from St. Louis Mo. I’ve been in the entertainment industry since I was 16. Being a part of some of the biggest events and clubs in the St. Louis area with a local group we formed called Tha Durrtty Boys from 99-2007. Which was the year I relocated to Houston. I relocated just for a change and growth—no intentions at all on being in the night life. I got a job at Dr. Pepper and was living a normal citizen’s life. Lol. But as I explored the city to see what it had to offer I realized I could change the cities nightlife drastically. I had something in me this city had never seen. So me and a childhood friend of mine that also lives here “JayDerrty” formed Fab Five which was a promotion company. It consists of Jay, Khalil, PJ, Dreno and myself. We created some of the best night club nights ever in Houston. Club Next & Swivel being the most popular.
This was my introduction into this industry in this city. From that point I’ve never looked back. My name and a rep in this city is now with the elites. From throwing the biggest concerts, to promoting the best clubs. But eventually my passion for being out every night dwindled down but I still wanted to be in the industry somehow. So in 2015 me and my father in law “Marc Crawford” opened one of the best bars to ever hit the north side of Houston TX. “Vibe Sports Lounge” this was my test run in ownership. We had tremendous success for almost three years, and I learned hands on what to do and what not to do before we eventually closed that business down due to personal reasons. And now that’s what brings us to the new powerhouse “Plush Bar & Grill”. This place wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for my partners—Kwan, Barlow, and Boom. We literally built this place from the ground up with our own hands. No loans, no investors, no contractors, no mentors. Straight faith, determination, and trust in each other. And by God’s will, this is where we sit today. Blessed.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Easy?? Definitely not!! Being from another state that’s nowhere near here was one my big struggle. I knew no one!! At home, I was known and had already had a name. So the rebuilding brand was kind of rough. But I think my biggest struggle has been balancing my family and chasing my dreams at the same time. I have been married to my beautiful wife “Kortney Dickson” coming up on 5 years now. We’ve been together for the last eight years. My wife will tell you I’m a workaholic, so sometimes I get tunnel vision and forget I have to make that time for home as well. But at this point, I have learned to balance things out.
Tell us more about the business.
Plush Bar and Grill specialize in the environment! There are very few places you can go to have a dope feel and get great food, plus a good hookah with great drinks. To get all that in one night you typically would have to go to multiple places. Especially with our first location being on the Northside, it’s nothing anywhere close to us that gives the feel we do. On top of Our food is A1!!! Everyone serves the same Hennessy, But you can’t get food like ours anywhere. I think what makes us most proud is seeing families come in and enjoy what we have built. Considering we are all family men. What sets us apart is how hands-on we are. We are very direct with our establishment. Our success doesn’t come from hiring PR’s or marketing firms. The people who have helped spread the word of Plush were our direct people.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. I believe what’s meant is meant. Me and my partners have tried to open a place in the past together, and it didn’t go through. That one wasn’t meant. Plush was meant for us!
