Meet Leo Johnson of LJ Performance Training Facility

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leo Johnson.

Leo, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started training in 2008 with just 1 high school kid. 6 weeks later I had 18 high school kids. Trained high school, college and arena football kids until 2010 when I moved to Miami for 8 months to get my certification and do an internship at a sports performance facility. After that, I moved to LA for 14 months to train and learn from other trainers when finally I settled in Houston January 2014. Worked at a Sports Performance Training Facility for 3 years until I decided to branch out on my own to open my own training facility.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not a smooth road at all. I have 2 children that I moved away from to chase this dream. I went from seeing them daily to seeing them once a month (depending on my financial situation sometimes not even that). The training facility I worked at in Houston had its ups and downs.

Worked from 5 am to 8 pm daily for less than $6 an hour. Couldn’t afford to go visit my children and eventually lost my apartment and ended up sleeping in my car.

Please tell us about LJ Performance Training Facility.
My business caters to trainers. I offer independent trainers an amazing facility to train their clients. I personally specialize in training pro athletes. It’s my passion. It makes me proud knowing that I help these men and women compete/perform at their highest level. They have families to support and take care of.

Knowing that I can help them do that and have longevity in their career is what makes me most proud. I’m a corrective based functional trainer. I focus on their specific skill set. The workouts I put together fixes problems with their bodies from the inside out. Any imbalances, previous or current injuries get corrected along with strengthening all the smaller muscles around the joints.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Playing sports is my favorite memory. I didn’t play video games or anything. I was always involved with sports. Basketball was my first love, I was better at football.
