Today we’d like to introduce you to Leticia Elias.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Leticia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have worked tirelessly for almost 30 years mastering my profession as a roofer. I started in the roofing industry in 1988, while I was still in high school, I was 17 years old at the time. My mother worked along-side my father for 10 years, so she was a strong female role model for me. When my mother retired, I took her position in the business, and it wasn’t until years later that I realized that I was one of a very few women in the roofing industry. I learned the trade by working along-side my father for 20 years. After his retirement in 2010, I started Elias Commercial Roof Systems. I have worked at every phase of the business, and I have served on the board of industry and community organizations. While licensing is not a mandate in our state, I received my Roofing Contractors of Texas industry license in 1994.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
After so many years in the industry, I don’t get odd smirks when I say I am a roofer. It took years for me to prove my qualifications as an installer. In the beginning, I would have to work really hard to overcome the industries stereotypes. My greatest challenge today is maintaining a steady business growth. The balance between my daily involvement in the design and installation of roof systems and giving back to the community that has given me so much is very challenging. Opening and maintaining lines of communication in this male-dominated industry requires hard work and persistence.
It’s trying to keep the balance of all the nuts and bolts of business that makes Elias fun. My business – like all others — is a living and breathing entity that must deliver measurable results to its customers. The products and services we offer must be of the highest quality, and the team that delivers these products and services must be cohesive, professional, experienced and reliable.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Elias Commercial roof Systems – what should we know?
Elias Commercial Roof Systems is a full service roof installation and design firm. We install certified commercial and residential roof systems. These certification entails four years of approved installations, continuous training, and the financial backing of our work by the manufacturer. When we take on a roofing project, my team and I are focused on being “Solutions-Driven.” Our clients’ top three statements regarding why they choose my firm are: 1) that they have always been able to trust in our professional opinion, 2) that they know we are committed to a quality installation, and 3) that they can be certain that I am always a phone call away. Serving as the chair of the Houston Chapter of the National Women in Roofing or and offering an apprentice program geared toward helping “at risk youth” find viable career choices, are two of many ways that Elias Commercial Roof Systems is demonstrating social and corporate responsibility.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I was born and raised in an inner city environment, and while my parents were hard working entrepreneurs, I had to learn the daily nuances of business from business mentors. I have had so many fabulous mentors; starting from my college years as a participant in The Small Business Development Center, The Center for Entrepreneurship, Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program, Johns Manville and Versico, Kiley Advisors, Turner Construction, Skanska USA, Community Leaders, Office of the Mayor; the list is so long, that I would certainly forget someone.
Each provided me with some level of support, candid advice and more importantly a place of trust where I could go and be myself.
