Today we’d like to introduce you to Leticia Longmiles.
Leticia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I remember it being the summer of 2001. I was excited about becoming a sixth grader at Hamilton Middle School in the Houston Heights area when my mother introduced me to the life of politics and the criminal justice system.
As an educator, my mother constantly challenged me about every aspect of life that one could imagine. This particular summer, she was interested in and kept me at her hip while learning and becoming involved as a community activist in a then high profile criminal matter. Being the inquisitive child that I was, I asked many questions and became fascinated with the courts, the law and the legal system as a whole.
From that moment I knew that I wanted to be a lawyer and thereafter became proactive by honing in on “what I thought” were the skills needed to become an attorney. I joined the speech and debate team and competed in numerous competitions. During college, I registered for advanced writing courses. Lastly, I always kept an active reading list.
Essentially, I remained focused and challenged myself throughout every stage of my academic career. Surely, it paid off. Now I am a criminal defense attorney licensed through the State of Texas. Although I put in many hours of studying and worked extremely hard to get where I am today, there is a myriad of supporters such as teachers, family members, and colleagues that have helped me each step of the way.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. While being an established attorney is rewarding in itself, the process comes with great challenges. The first being law school. Upon the completion of three years of law school, I found myself to have a new way of thinking. There were so many theories, concepts, and ideologies that I explored and mastered, in what felt to be so little time, to successfully complete school and earn the degree that currently hangs behind my desk.
The second being me having to tackle what I call, “THE BEAST” (The Texas Bar Exam). Now, I could go into detail about this three-day exam, but I’ll refrain from rehashing those memories and let those of you interested in becoming an attorney find out. Seriously though, passing that exam made me feel like one of Olivia Pope’s honorary gladiators. Or like I had officially earned the statute of the Scales of Justice from Annaliese Keating.
Again, I digress. The third and final challenge was establishing myself as a solo practitioner. Throughout this process, I’ve had to grow and learn to trust myself as a person and as a professional. I learned a lot about trust and making business decisions.
I really had to grow up. Nevertheless, I absolutely would not trade any of the learning experiences for anything in the world. Trust. I still have a lot of growing to do. The grease is just getting hot.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am the managing attorney for the Law Office Of Leticia Longmiles. I handle all criminal matters, which include misdemeanors, felonies, parole revocation hearings, and traffic citations. In my opinion, my empathetic nature is what sets me apart from others.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Of course! This is my hometown. This where I became exposed to the law, studied the law and blossomed into the professional that I am today. There are millions of people in this city and surrounding areas that need legal representation! There’s always room for more!
I would tell any new lawyer starting out to believe and have confidence in yourself! Life will carry you to where you need to be! Being that I am a firm believer, I will also say that God will carry you to where you need to be!
