Today we’d like to introduce you to Lily DuBose.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lily. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
During Hurricane Harvey, I was in the closet with my mom during a tornado warning. We were watching the news on her iPad and I saw lots of kids evacuating. I knew I had to do something and I decided to give away my toys.
Fast forward to today, I have given over 5,000 toys away and am still giving. Lily’s Toy Box gives new toys away to any child going through a difficult time. I send toys all over the United States.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road with Lily’s Toy Box. People love to help kids! Sometimes LTB gets low in money and toys so I have to work a little harder, but I don’t mind. Lily’s Toy Box has worked with some great companies that have been supportive of all I do. During this time, I have worked with Athleta, American Girl, Learning Express, Tiff’s Treat, Amazon, Target, Waxing the City, Bering’s Hardware, Tiffs Treats and others. There are also a lot of individuals that have helped out.
Please tell us about Lily’s Toy Box.
Lily’s Toy Box is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit that provides new toys to kids going through a difficult time. LTB is good at making kids smile. I like to see their heart spark with joy. I am most proud of giving away over 5,000 toys.
LTB is different from other companies because it was started by an eight years old. I know what toys kids like and it makes me so happy to help. The first toy I gave away was one of my LEGO sets. LEGO sets are still my favorite toy to give away. I also like working with my mom on this business. LTB has also brought a lot of new people into my life. I love to receive letters from kids talking about their new toy but my favorite is to receive pictures of the kids smiling.
One time I gave a little girl a new baby doll. When the family got home, they texted my mom and said the little girl named her babydoll Lily after me.
There was another time when I needed a bike for a six years old boy. My mom was on the computer looking for a bike to buy and one of her friends called her. She had a brand new boy bike that would be perfect for a six years old. I started cheering out loud.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was getting to be on FOX News FOX and FRIENDS. I still can’t believe I was on national tv. I was so nervous. You couldn’t tell on tv but my mom and I were holding hands under the table because we were both shaking so bad. Interviews are fun for me but live interviews are the hardest.
