Today we’d like to introduce you to Linda Duryea.
Hi Linda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I fell in love with mosaics when I travelled through Europe at a young age. After retirement, I researched this ancient form and quickly realized it was my passion. So, I started taking classes, attended workshops, and also traveled across the U.S. learning from some of the best mosaic artists in the country. I have applied their techniques but have also adapted my own style of contemporary mosaics with each piece I create. My specialties include designer mirrors and outdoor artwork that will stand the test of time. Linda strives to offer artwork that is uplifting while bringing joy to the heart. She finds to be one of the most relaxing of all art forms because of the freedom of expression. Each mosaic is its own one-of-a-kind masterpiece personalized by your touch, your imagination. You have total control which leads to your inner self, feeling good and at ease. It also provides a wonderful exercise for the brain. Creating mosaics utilizes both sides of our brain simultaneously. The left side of our brain focuses on all the separate pieces. This is our analytical side. The right side of our brain is our creative side. It sees the “overall” picture. When we exercise both sides of our brain we reach a state of mind that is serene and that increases levels of dopamine that surges through our brain. This lowers our breathing/heart rate, In so doing, it reduces our blood pressure and contributes to our overall well-being. The visual beauty of making a mosaic is simply a bonus,
Many people think that you have to know how to draw, but that is simply not true. If you can trace a design onto your project, then the rest is easy. I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It takes some time to become proficient, but all-in-all it has been an easy skill to learn. Mosaics don’t have to be perfect. Some of the most beautiful designs are abstracts so mistakes can be made and no one knows. The one thing that people don’t understand is that mosaics are a traditional craft which you can not pull off in a half-hour. You need time, patience, and planning.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Before I retired, I was a special education teacher and later became a school administrator. I feel that this has helped me be a better mosaic teacher because I know how to break down learning into parts. It has helped me be patient when it comes to helping others. I do specialize in teaching all levels of skill. I do not have one particular interest when choosing my next project. I love experimenting with different tiles and beautiful tesserae, which in turn, creates intriguing masterpieces.

The thing that matters to me the most is helping others learn how to create something beautiful. I strive to make sure each person I teach has success and enjoys the classes.
