Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Wexler.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
As a teenager, I took a cake decorating class at a craft store with my stepmom. It was an incredible creative outlet for me, and I became addicted to it. I spent late nights and weekends in High School destroying my parents’ kitchen and developing my craft. Since that time, I’ve worked in bakeries around Houston off and on, but I’ve continued to sell cakes and cookies as my “side hustle.” Only now, I’m up late destroying my own kitchen – all for art. Baking has always been my passion, but in recent years I decided to get a little bit more serious about transforming hobby to business, and Crumby Bakeshop was born.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle I have faced along the way is embracing my talents. While cake decorating has always been the area in which I shine, I spent years worrying that no one would respect me if I worked in a kitchen. Hell, some of my best friends didn’t believe what I did was a “real job.” I’ve diverted from my path a few times, but I always come back to cake design. If you’re going to spend a third of your life at work, it might as well be doing something you love, right?

I specialize in custom cakes and cookies for any occasion or event. My favorite projects are the ones that end in people saying, “That’s cake?!”
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Houston is a great place to start a business! You have millions of people to market your product to, an amazing network of resources, and endless creative inspiration. The downside is that our market is flooded with talented culinary artists, and it can be difficult to stand out or feel like you measure up. My advice would be to pick one thing you’re good at and learn how to do a damn good job at it. Pair that with outstanding customer service, and you’re golden.
