Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa Hilton.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I own a little medical spa that specializes in CBD & Hemp Infused Skincare and Pain Management. I started this business basically because, after six years of post-stroke recovery, no one would hire me. I’ve been a licensed medical Esthetician for about ten years and always kept up my license and continued education, I even got certified in several new areas in esthetics so when I was physically ready to return to work, I would never be left behind. Unfortunately, due to minimal brain damage, I suffered from aphasia (loss of ability to understand or express speech) and short and long memory loss so my response time during interviews took way longer for me and ability to communicate under stress. Well, I guess I just looked like I didn’t know my stuff. I tried for three years and yet no one would give me a chance.
During my recovery about three years ago, I started taking CBD oil and it changed my life. I know more and more people are learning about CBD oil but even just a few years ago here in Texas, it was not anything anyone could teach me more about, so when visiting my oldest who is my niece in Colorado, I learned so much and got the desire to learn more about cannabis in general. So, I took seven-plus courses and am now a Certified Cannabis Specialist.
My experience with CBD has been exceptional. I had almost 20 bottles of medications on my nightstand after the strokes and after CBD I became 100% pharmaceutical FREE!!!! I noticed as a severe asthmatic and allergy sufferer I no longer needed allergy meds! No more epi pen! No more inhaler! My memory started getting better, PTSD symptoms have gotten better, I can sleep now and I just felt like I got my life back.
I wanted to help others who have been to rock bottom and are tired of pharmaceuticals and the awful side effects and have quality products from small mom and pop farmers, so then drum roll please, Hemplication Face & Body was born.
It’s been almost a year since I opened my doors and I know THIS was my purpose.
I don’t raise prices ridiculously high, I’m not a pushy salesperson, and I LISTEN TO YOU. I’m NOT a doctor nor do I claim to be but I am educated and have the knowledge and capabilities to make everything I sell I think that means something. I’m not just trying to make a quick but with a new fad, ya know? This is my life. My niece and her boyfriend are farmers and you bet I carry their brand and my own Hemplication products are in the works.
Keep in mind… this is my first year back to work after two strokes. I took a chance on myself and I think I am doing alright.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting this business has not been easy. I am still in debt with medical bills but I had two kids I had to get back to work. I borrowed a small amount to start up but that wasn’t the hard part. I went to try and get my business bank account and because my business name had the word HEMP in it they said they couldn’t do business with me. I stayed there at that bank for almost 2 hours and educated my banker and then the corporate office. You better believe I walked out of there with my head held high in my one man match cause I got my business account!!!
My second obstacle was trying to educate people so they would not fear the unknown and try to break through what had been stained in the minds of many and most important to trust me. I’m happy to report more people are coming around and I built my spa in a more medical environment so those not wanting to shop at a smoke shop don’t have to.
My last obstacle was merchant processing. After a while, anyone using square or PayPal for the sales of CBD will have their accounts shut down, with no warning what so ever. They won’t even talk to you to hear your argument. I didn’t know what I was going to do to maintain accurate bookkeeping so after a thural investigation of my spa, my website, all of my products with test results, and social media I now process through my bank as well!!!!!

My mini spa also is my own art gallery and display my own artwork that is for sale. I am a local Houston Artist. So, the atmosphere and overall feel you get at Hemplication is definitely one of a kind.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I can’t wait to see more business professionally specialize in Cannabis in general and CBD for now. Our city could use anything that brings good health and happiness to someone’s way of living in the world would be a better place if everyone was on CBD !! Lol
I believe the definition of success is different for everyone. For me, I feel I have become successful when I have helped someone feel better and see the light at the end of the tunnel and give them that little bit of hope back that the light isn’t an oncoming train.
I feel successful when I learn more lol education is everything!
My personal success is now that I am doing something I love, helping others and being a good mother, provider for my kids, I am a member of the Chamber and I donate weekly to St. Jude’s.
I would like to open my second location in the next year and if things go as planned, it will be in the Sawyer Yards area where I show my art!!!!!!! Fingers crossed, lol!
