Meet Loretta Rodman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Loretta Rodman.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up in a Mexican household, at a young age, I was taught to always help my Mother or Grandmother in the kitchen. Whether it was cooking tortillas or picking peaches outside there was always something to do.

My most keen memories as a young girl were when Mom would pull a bag of Toll House chocolate chips along with her red Tupperware bowl and place them on the kitchen counter. My brother and I just knew that something great was to come! I’d stand beside her and watch her every move as she’d place cookie dough on cookie sheets and place them into the oven! Fondness for desserts has always been a big deal in our family. No special occasion required. There was always Pan dulce or some kind of postre or dessert around. Baking for family is how I gained my experience. Lot’s of trial and error, but through all of that, baking has always given me great joy and this still holds true today.

I would always say jokingly to my parents,

“You know, one of these days, I’m going to open a bakery!”

Fast forward to 2016, I’m happily married and working for a Global Aviation company. I always thought to myself, “There has to be more to life than coming to an office job! I want to do something much greater!” So, I spoke with my husband about my crazy idea of starting a small home-based bakery and we prayed on it. Weeks later, my husband tells me, “I had a dream Babe and you had a bakery.”

Laughing hysterically but in shock, I was like, “What?

But how? What was the name of it?”

He says, ” It was called, A Little Touch of Sugar.”

With excitement in my voice, I said, “That’s a very catchy name! I think I might stick to that.”

And that is how A.L.T.O.S came about. At the end of January 2018, I took a giant leap of faith and decided to pursue baking full-time and have been working on my craft and taking orders from home ever since.
February 2018. I entered my first cake competition in Round Rock and placed Silver.

Baking and decorating cakes give me the opportunity to be creative.

My goal is to give my clients something that is not only visually attractive but delicious.
I give all the honor to God for giving me this desire and gift.

May it be for a short while or permanent, I am grateful.

Please tell us about your art.
To me, cake art is a way to freely express my feelings. I truly enjoy it when a client gives me free reign and allows me to decorate their cake any way I choose. I get inspiration from all kinds of things that surround me. Magazines, books, flowers even social media trends. I’ll practice working on a particular technique and add my own twist to it. For the exception of taking a couple of classes that a good friend of mine instructed, everything that I have learned is self-taught.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The biggest challenge I feel that artists face today is, that those who are not artists overlook all the hard work. long hours and effort that goes into creating something beautiful.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
