Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucia Ferguson.
Hi Lucia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Like many of today’s entrepreneurs, my story started with the pandemic. It was a time for me to uncover my true passion. – jewelry making.
As a child, I always wore pop bead necklaces and anything with my birthstone. I was also attracted to stones and pebbles. If it had an odd shape or color, it came home with me. As an adult, I visited beaches around the country to collect rocks and sea glass. Later in life, I discovered gem stores and began purchasing gemstones, jewelry making tools, how to books, and accessories. Everything went into boxes and whenever I moved, they moved with me. Never knowing how meaningful the contents would become.
During Covid, I unpacked the boxes I had for years. This is what prompted me to learn how to make jewelry. I am primarily self-taught using books, You Tube videos, internet searches, asking questions, and a lot of practice.
After researching which gemstones were associated with their corresponding energies, I started making Onyx stretch bracelets. Why did I choose Onyx? It is the gemstone associated with grounding, protection and strength. Three of the metaphysical qualities many people sought during this time.
My husband and I sold the bracelets at craft fairs and markets throughout the area. And to my surprise, people purchased them!
Without the support of my family, friends and amazing customers, I would have never realized my passion – Curating Handmade Jewelry using Gemstones from the Earth to help People Channel their Internal Energies.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Absolutely not!
My late husband and I were very active with craft fairs and markets. We grew our business and even developed a formula for beard oil. Once he passed, I stopped making jewelry and basically quit Aqua Rockx.
In 2025, I missed making jewelry and sharing my designs with people. I realized I could no longer do outside markets alone, so I have concentrated primarily on indoor settings. I found my passion again, developed a new website, sell at local school district fundraisers, and have a collection at a local gift shop. I am also developing a series of blogs about gemstones.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a retired high school Social Studies teacher. Being around teens provided me with a unique opportunity to gain insight into what energy gemstones and designs were most popular. I continue to be involved with students, so I can tap into their knowledge of what is popular. One thing that sets me apart from others is that I sew my bracelets after I string them! It’s a different way to make them more durable.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Whether you are starting out or established, it is important to have someone to help you navigate your journey. My sister is my mentor. She is a popular artist back east and makes jewelry as a hobby. Her guidance and input on branding, marketing, design, materials, and pricing is invaluable to me.
I love meeting people and networking with other artisans. We exchange ideas for popular craft markets, best wholesalers to purchase supplies, marketing ideas, etc. Plus, we follow each other on social media which helps to increase our online presence.
