Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Manuel Flores.
Luis Manuel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
If I told you that I was a KFC cashier who became a business owner… to a spouse of a cancer survivor… to a personal self-pandemic survivor multiple times in my life? Would you believe it? Well, it’s true. Today, I own the My Flores Agent Group. A group of real estate entrepreneurs made up by brother and sister. We help people find their dream home, one client a time.
In 2016, I decided I needed a change in life after being with the Yum! Brands for almost a decade, I woke up one day to tell myself that enough was enough and I needed a change. I didn’t have a backup plan NOR a job to fall into, but I knew it was time. I gave my notice at work and decided to switch careers. I ended up in Apartment Leasing which was never too far from the real estate industry but after a few short months, I knew the small rental commissions was not the reason why I had left my tenure job. So I decided to get into school. I overloaded my class schedule and completed my courses in less than four months…. I was ready to become a licensed realtor.
By the time it was all said and done it was now 2017 and I was juggling my day time job AND my entrepreneur career, taking phone calls and responding to emails in between job duties… needless to say, my supervisors were not very happy. I also knew that unless I ventured out full time into real estate, I was never really going to be able to maximize my dreams. So like I did before, I took a leap of faith and ended my hourly employment.
Before I knew it, it was the summer of 2017 and I had two listings on the market. I was the up and coming agent in my brokerage and I was ready to take them by storm. Then….. in June my life took a huge toll. Just as my life was starting to take off, I started noticing that my husband was becoming more fragile and weak. He was losing weight and was in a deep depression. I hid everything with a smile as everyone in our families questioned what was going on. In June of 2017, he was hardly able to walk from the bedroom to the restroom without grabbing on to the walls. His legs were so weak…. on July 9th, he was diagnosed with Cancer and we where told that he needed an immediate brain surgery to remove a mass in his brain. So we went for it. On July 10th, my husband underwent surgery and came out fine. He was in ICU for 24 hours and recovered just fine…. but LORD! Where things about to take a huge turn! By the end of August, he was now wheelchair-bound, he could no longer walk. He ended up hospitalized for about four months. Everything we could imagine…. WAS wrong with him. He even lost his ability to make sound decisions on his own for a few weeks following the surgery.
My LIFE PAUSED.
I threw everything in the air and became his caregiver, overnight nurse, medication scheduler…. EVERYTHING. I had to stop work until further notice.
Before I knew it, I could no longer pay my bills. I moved into my mother in law’s house…. I felt lost. I didn’t know how to return to work. How to reach out to clients who had asked for my help. My whole real estate business had crumbled to pieces. I was devastated and didn’t know how to come back from this.
In March of 2018, after seven rounds of chemotherapy, my husband was pronounced Cancer free and after many months, I was able to finally take a deep breath. It was time to get things back on track.
2018 was a huge struggle as we tried to get things back on track and take life by our “new normal”. In 2019 we decided to take a leap of faith, and although he was still unable to walk…. we decided to take control of our lives and get our own place. After all, we had been independent and done it before for most of our lives.
2019 was the biggest success of my lifetime. I outdid any salary I had ever gotten and my business continued to flourish. 2020 is definitely the year of the My Flores Agent… with our current workload, we are already forecasted to double and maybe even triple last year’s production.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Having to pause to deal with my husband’s cancer journey was the biggest struggle. Learning how to get back in the swing of things and getting my company up and running was tough.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with My Flores Agent – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am proud to say that over 90% of our business comes from client referrals. We truly make our clients feel like family for every single transaction.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In the next 5-10 years, “My Flores Agent” will be one of Houston’s highest producing and on-growing team. I would love to be part of BravoTV show “Million Dollar Listing” if they ever bring it to Houston.
