Meet Madelyn Hubbard of My Dainty Cakes in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madelyn Hubbard.

Madelyn “Maddie Cakes” Hubbard is a “Culinista” at heart. For as long as she can remember, she has had a passion for the kitchen. With a Bachelor’s in Business Management from Tennessee State University, she always knew that she would be the owner of her own bakery specializing in dessert catering.

In June 2008, Madelyn opened her first in-home bakery in Nashville, TN named “Madelyn’s Creations.” Madelyn’s Creations was inspired by Madelyn’s love and passion for baking. Madelyn continued her passion even after her move to Houston, TX in 2014.  In January 2017, Madelyn decided to re-branded and officially launched her business in Houston, TX. “Baked with a DAINTY twist!”

To add to her culinary platform, Madelyn launched My Dainty Dish Catering and Confections. My Dainty Dish is also a blog and video series on YouTube. Madelyn is a published author of two cookbooks entitled “My Dainty Dish Healthy Summertime Cookbook” and “Soulful Favorites a Holiday Collection.”

Through My Dainty Dish, you can receive customized meal plans, event catering, private catering, and meal prepping.

My Dainty Cakes formally “Madelyn’s Creation’s” specializes in cupcakes, specialty cakes, “dainty” cakes, cake pops, and other sweets. Located in the medical center, we’re central to most areas of Houston. My Dainty Cakes is known for its creative cupcake collections, and it’s “dainty” twist on traditional delectable treats.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey has not been smooth at all. I have learned that being a business owner is hard work. In fact, it is the hardest thing that I have ever done in my life. However, each step in my journey has been so rewarding. I started my business in Nashville, TN then moved to Houston, TX where I started over in a totally new market. I didn’t have friends and family to help and support.  I had to build my clientele from scratch.

I have had some ups and downs, on my journey, but I can’t complain. This is to be expected especially when your business is in the beginning stages. I am so grateful of how much my business has grown over the past 10 years, or even the past 2 years when I relaunched in Houston. My Dainty Cakes and Dish has become a household name! And that is my number 1 goal. It feels amazing when I’m somewhere and someone stops me and say hey you’re My Dainty Cakes.

The biggest struggle that I have had is to get in front of my ideal clients. Branding and marketing yourself is so important. You have to stay consistent and on top of things at all times. It can be a little difficult to take care of the business side of things while actually working the business. So time management and proper planning each day has become a must.

I learned to ask for help and to hire help. Going into owning a business I felt compelled to do everything myself.  Now I realize that only makes things more challenging. My advise for anyone starting out is to try and outline and identify all the needs of your company and industry. Identity what your strengths and weaknesses are in those areas, then if it’s something that you can’t do then find out who can and hire them to do it. There is so much more to a dessert catering company than just baking delicious treats. So invest in your business. It will be worth it, trust me.

Please tell us about My Dainty Cakes.
My Dainty Cakes is a dessert catering company. We specialize in custom cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts. We are known for our custom flavors. If it isn’t on the menu, we can create it for you. We can also take any vision that you have for your desserts and bring it to life. Our slogan is that we are “baked with a DAINTY twist,” but we pride ourselves on always giving our clients the DAINTY experience.

We give you this same experience in our sister company My Dainty Dish. This is what sets us aside from other companies. We give you top quality products and a great experience. I am most proud of the quality and standards that we set our clients. We want to make each and every event special.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood was cooking and baking with my grandmother. Growing up we would spend the summers at my grandmother’s house in Arkansas. She cooked three meals a day with homemade desserts. We would start our morning with breakfast.

After breakfast, we went out to her garden and picked our vegetables for dinner. I would help her in the garden then we would clean and prep them to cook. After that, she would stop and cook lunch. After lunch, we would finish dinner. This was our day every day during the summers, and I loved it.

I wouldn’t be the “Culinista” that I am today if it wasn’t for Nana, my grandmother. She taught me how to cook with love and what soul food really means. And to this day, I cherish each and every moment that I shared in the kitchen with her. I hope to recreate those same memories one day when I have children.
