Meet Mallory Henderson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Henderson.

Singer-songwriter, blogger, and publicist, Mallory Henderson is a Jane of All Trades. After growing up with dreams of being a star, she obtained a degree in Public Relations from the University of Houston and went on to build a career as an all-around creative.

Inspired by a year-long struggle with moderate-severe depression and questionable self-esteem, Mallory started the I Am Blog. Formerly a personal blog, it aims to share Mallory’s true self in various areas of life, encouraging others to unapologetically be themselves.

As she continues to maintain and improve her mental health through regular therapy, she also encourages conversation and action around mental health in minority and young adult communities through her annual charity party, The Premier Benefit & Birthday Bash. The party raises funds to send minority young adults to therapy if they’ll be courageous in seeking help, just as she decided to do.

Mallory has not forgotten her dreams of fame and entertainment. After years of performing covers and being featured on songs by other artists, she is working on her own music career. She can be seen and heard performing around Houston and on social media and is expected to release her debut LP in March 2019.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I definitely struggled to find the ideal job after graduating from college. I still haven’t landed the job I wanted, but I think I’m better off.

I also had a mean bout with doubting myself. That came from a lot of different places: not getting the job I wanted, comparing myself to others, regret of letting go of my dreams, setting extremely high standards for myself…

I’ve struggled with low self-esteem, lack of resources, fear… every day has the potential to be a struggle. Pushing through is the key.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m a PR professional by day, singer-songwriter by night. What sets me apart from others is that I don’t follow the rules of the fields I’ve chosen. A lot of people say that a good publicist stays behind the scenes.

That’s true in some sense, but what others don’t have in common is that the title “publicist” is not my only title and it’s not my ultimate stop on this ride. I have other dreams as well, and I do what I have to do attain them.

Additionally, though I am a bit of a rule follower, I find other ways to break traditional professional standards while maintaining my rare, extreme professionalism.

What were you like growing up?
When I was very young, I was outgoing and very imaginative. I performed all the time and pretended to be from other times and places: wardrobe, accents, and all. As I got older, I lost that creativity but I’m working hard to welcome that little girl back into my life.

Throughout my schooling, I was very astute. I loved school and did not accept anything lower than a B. I’m terrible at math and some sciences, so I always knew I might bring home a “C,” but that was never okay with me. It killed me.

I loved to laugh, I was a dancer for 14 years, I cheered, I played softball, I was heavily involved at church… I did everything and made sure I was great at every single activity.
