Today we’d like to introduce you to Mandy Jo “MJ” Perez and Luis Aguilar.
MJ and Luis, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
LA Home Solutions is owned by Luis and MJ of Spring, Texas. Our business and non-profit were born entirely on dreams of ours from different passions we individually had. The common denominator is our passion to serve, which still remains at the forefront of our core values. Serving our community with our workmanship, time and donations are a top priority for us.
Our businesses were born after Luis returned back to Houston from being on the road with a 15-year career in construction. He and I reunited after 28 years of being apart since elementary school. It may sound crazy, but Luis was my first true love and crush in the fourth grade. After life split us apart at an early age, destiny brought us back together 28 years later and engaged to be married this year. That’s when the LA chapter began. Luis decided to start a small handyman business using his initials as the business name to keep it simple. The idea was purely born out of necessity to help with the family bills but little did we know God had a different plan for us. Much less, who knew it would all begin where Luis grew up as a young child. His family worked for the Marshall Family when Gleannloch Farms Subdivision was an actual farm in the ’80s. He was back on his old stomping grounds.
Fast forward and we’ve been blessed enough that I could join the team full-time after being with MD Anderson Cancer Center for many years. With my business operations and marketing background and Luis’s construction expertise, we’ve been able to grow our business. However, we owe it to our team. As our team grew our talent in various trades grew, which allowed us to expand into all aspects of home improvements, carpentry and full-home remodeling. We prayed for each of our team members before they joined the team because we knew how dependent we were on them to believe in our vision and have the quality craftsmanship needed to serve the community in a bigger capacity.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s definitely not been a smooth road. We have had several bumps in the road from professional conflict trying to run a business as a couple to not having team members who believed in our vision. But we have come a long way in two years. We are learning our individual strengths and weaknesses and how to place ourselves as owners and our team into roles fitting to their strengths. We are empowering them to own their roles and responsibilities day-to-day. It’s taking a bit for Luis and me to let go and overcome the control factor but we’re learning every day to get better at it (grin).
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the L.A. Home Solutions story. Tell us more about the business.
LA Home Solutions is a full-service home remodeling contractor specializing in kitchen and bathroom remodels, handyman services and remodel design consulting. We also provide custom carpentry services including barn doors built by our oldest son at HG Barn Doors. We are known in the community for providing knowledgeable, honest, and genuine remodeling and home repair services. We’re most proud of our clients who tell us that we exceeded their expectations and how great our team is at working hard and being professional. What sets us apart is our hands-on approach to each project, our reliability and professionalism, and our cleanliness during and after each project is complete.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We have been extremely fortunate and blessed in our lives and business. Starting from the prayer, I prayed for 17 years to be blessed with a “Man of God,” and looking for Luis for years through my adult life, but only finding him at God’s time three years ago. He was the answer to my prayer that I prayed for so long. With destiny at our sides and entrepreneurial spirit embedded in us, our businesses have flourished. Don’t get me wrong there were many times at least for me that I cried not knowing how we were going to pay ourselves. But Luis always held strong in faith and reminded me that it was all temporary. Our lives together and businesses are all based on faith, hope, and certainly love.
