Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcela De La Paz.
Marcela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am 26 years old and an Afro Latina from Cali Colombia. I been in the country now for nine years. I am an actress, model and influencer. Miss Sabor Latina was inspired bu rejection. Being an Afro Latina isn’t necessary easy when trying to enter the media world. When I started trying to pursue being an actress I went to the Hispanic networks and they always told me I didn’t fit the profile of a Latina. I asked what is the profile of a Latina? And it simply came down to my skin color. After knocking many doors I decided to go to the Africa American network just to face “your accent is too strong” is then when I thought why not create my own Afro Latina platform and that’s when Miss Sabor Latina came to life. A beauty pageant for Afro latinas that isn’t just focused on beauty but it’s focused on talent, empowerment and knowledge. Where we can integrate ourselves and become one community.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can’t say it has been easy, I still get people who don’t believe in my mission and who think it’s a waste of time to try to allow the new generation to understand that we are all humans and deserve the same opportunities but my focus is all the amazing people who are behind us. I am grateful for those who do believe we are capable of creating a world where skin color is no longer a discussion. Where our children can look at a novela and see themselves rejected on tv.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
There are many pageants around the world but Miss Sabor Latina is allowing Afro latinas around the country to say we are not just beautiful but we have talent. We will have talent shows, charity events, fitness and spiritual events because to be an amazing representation of a community you need to be completely healthy mentality, spiritually and physically.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
