Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcela White.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working for my sister who worked in the charter industry in 1986. Around 1988 she received a job offer from Southwest Airlines that she very wisely accepted. I remained in the charter business where I went on to earn my private pilot license in order to understand the unique insight to working with pilots. I eventually met my husband who was also in the aviation industry. Together we have worked in this specialized business for over 28 years. Being a self-employed female in this mostly male-dominated business, is not for everyone. It has, however, worked for me. I thrive on the challenges each trip brings as I put the many pieces of the puzzle together to ensure a successful and safe trip for our elite customers. Over the course of 30 years my customers have ranged from Saudi Sheiks to Heads of State, Fortune 100 CEOs, high profile politicians and movie stars to name a few. Even after 30 years I still have a passion for this business and a personal mission to ensure each trip is successful and each customer happy.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think anyone successfully self-employed can say their road has always been a smooth one. There have been struggles, yet I choose to turn many of them into new opportunities. Based in Houston, with a heavy emphasis on the oil industry, our business is directly impacted by the economic climate of the city. Many of our clients are in energy. Over the course of 30 years while we have seen the price of oil significantly decrease, we have taken the opportunity to diversify our client base. Additionally, lower oil prices, means lower jet fuel prices which reduces the cost of private travel. This in turn attracts new clients who can now afford to use private aircraft for their travel needs.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Tavaero Jet Charter – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
There is a misconception that people who charter spend too much for their travel. In reality, those who take advantage of this type of travel understand that there is a dollar value associated with their time. Each hour they spend traveling or each day they are gone from the office has a cost. By expediting that travel time and minimizing the time away from the office you are providing someone a means of maximizing their value. Of course, there are those folks that just want the convenience and privacy of going on a vacation without the hassle of lines, delays, etc. One often overlooked use of the private charter service is the transport of organs to save lives. Without the ability to charter, many hospitals would not get to the recipient patient in time to transplant the life-saving organ. For 30 years I have said we are NOT in the transportation industry, rather we are in the service business. Anyone can transport someone from Point A to Point B.
The focus on customer service determines the experience and is the reason our customers come back time and again. Our employees understand that without the customer, we have nothing and they go the extra mile to ensure Tavaero’s service is superior. Over the past 30 years Tavaero Jet Charter has weathered many storms, outperformed many competitors and today stands proudly among the best charter companies in the country. It is a testament to our employees and our company TEAM philosophy. As author Lorraine Grubbs said in her book “How to Create a Happy Workplace” it is imperative that each employee be given the resources and are empowered to do their jobs. This, along with a fair wage will give them the motivation to do their absolute best to take care of our customers.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Bigger is not always better. Our goal is to remain the size we are in order to have the personal relationship our customers appreciate. These relationships have made us successful for 30 years and we don’t have any desire to change that at this time.
