Meet Marcus and Kinga Guss Wunderle of Baa Baa Brewhouse in Brookshire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus and Kinga Guss Wunderle.

Marc has been a homebrewer for 10 years and I always wanted to have my own business.

Marc works in Oil and gas and I have a law degree from London, UK.

Marc is originally from Ohio and I am from Poland. I also lived in England for 8 years.

We moved to Houston from CA in 2013 and one day when Marc came back from work I told him that I have registered brewery as a business. It was very first baby step.

We named the brewery Baa Baa Brewhouse and the inspiration came from our kids favorite nursery rhyme Baa Baa Black Sheep.

The brewery is very kid friendly since we have 3 kids – 2, 4 and 6 year old.

We went through numerous permitting processes and lots of construction. City of Brookshire was very welcoming and pleasant to work with. We finally set the soft opening date for April 2016 and this year we have celebrated 1 year Anniversary.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We had no idea what we are getting into. Running a brewery is a rewarding operation but it is a hard job.

The biggest difficulty was to juggle family life with 2 little kids and 3rd one on the way (I was pregnant during construction time and then we had a newborn during installation time) and work at the brewery and for Marc his daytime job responsibilities with the work at the brewery after hours. We also came across few financial struggles – apart from 10% silent partner the brewery is self funded. We had to be creative with the ways we spent money and for that reasons big part of the construction work has been done by us – with the help of friends or family members flying from Ohio or UK.

Please tell us about Baa Baa Brewhouse.
Baa Baa Brewhouse is known for being one of the kids friendliest places. We are very close to Katy which is a hub for many families with kids. Our main objective is to provide relaxing fun environment for the parents and kids alike. The kids can play with many toys at the brewery – like play dough, Lego, chalk board, drawing and painting station while parents enjoy our beers.

We also have outdoor space where kids (and adults) can run around, play with water guns, balls and other outdoor games.

Having kids say to their parents that they do not want to go is the biggest reward. For us it means that we are doing right what we have set out to do.

Apart from activities for the kids, we do organize events like our latest one – beer and chips pairing and movie night.

We are one of the few breweries in the greater Houston area to brew very popular NEIPAs. We have released 5 cloudy IPAs so far. The most recent beer release was called ‘In a Galaxy Far Far Away. We are very pleased with the response of beer drinkers. Many of our customers like it. One of the beers we like is our What the Heff? Hefeweien. Our brewhouse is one of the smallest in this area – only 3BBLs – for this reason we produce small batches and we can play with many different varieties of hops and play with beer recipes.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
We would probably rent little bit bigger space to start with and little bit bigger brewhouse.
