Meet Margaret Naeve of M Naeve

Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Naeve.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I opened M Naeve, the store 11 years ago when I was 25 after acquiring a shop from a major fixture in the Houston design world who was looking to retire.

Over the last 11 years, the shop has evolved from being an antique store to carrying a mix of contemporary pieces exclusive to the shop from some of my favorite designers and makers like Apparatus Studio, EGG Collective, Martyn Thompson, Pinch in addition to important French, Swedish, Italian and Belgian antiques. My first design job came from one of my best clients in the shop about 8 years ago and I have been splitting my time between design and the shop ever since.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Just like any business owner will say, it is not always easy but it is what I love. So although there are days when it is frustrating or stressful I can always find the reward in making a living by doing something that I am extremely passionate about.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the M Naeve story. Tell us more about the business.
I have two parts to my business. I own a design shop that specializes in important and rare vintage/antique furniture and lighting as well as some new lines from designers that I love. As a designer and a shop M Naeve is definitely known for mixing antique and contemporary items.

I think I am most proud of being so immediately identifiable as different in this market. There is not another shop that looks like M Naeve and we have some really incredible exclusive relationships with lines who have become important fixtures within the shop and design projects.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is just what happens when preparation meets opportunity. I have always wanted to be in this world and grow as a professional in design so I am constantly learning so I am ready when opportunities present themselves.
