Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Ferrer.
Hi Maria, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started making calligraphy and hand lettering in 2016 as a hobby. I was a stay-at-home mom, and also unemployed, and calligraphy became a big part of my life as a therapeutic practice. So Crafty Studio officially was born in 2017, offering basically services related to calligraphy such as addressing envelopes, wedding welcome signs, place cards, seating charts, etc.
After a few years of hard work to make the business grow, I decided to expand services and products and today my main focus is wedding invitations design (and production), as well as day-of-wedding stationery.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No smooth at all! Creating this business from zero has been a huge challenge for me, especially at the beginning when I was still basically new to the country and didn’t know how things worked here or had any type of networking to help my business grow.
From speaking the language to creating an effective business strategy, and being a one-person business, every step has been a learning opportunity loaded with lots of mistakes along the way but also great outcomes.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I design and make wedding invitations and other stationery items basically wedding-related. My style is very clean and simple, and I like to think that my style leans more toward botanical/floral elements.
Also, being a calligrapher has helped me to create more unique pieces by incorporating it into my designs.
I am really proud of my ability to translate my client’s ideas into reality as well as how fast I can work without compromising the quality of my products. I am also very proud of how much my style has grown over the years.
One thing that I believe could set me apart from others is my flexibility and adaptability in terms of design and even materials. I am not too strict or always follow the rules… I try to adapt my style and expertise to all of my client’s expectations and needs.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
There’s always something to do… every day.
Even when I didn’t have any orders, I was so busy! Because I took that time to redesign the vision of my business, create more, evaluate the market and make a better business strategy that allowed me to eventually grow.
So every day, even if my agenda is light, I find new things to make for the business, new things that maybe I won’t see the results today, but in the future.
Taking care of my business and nourishing it every day. That’s a big lesson I’ve learned over these years.
Oh! Also, not to be too hard on me. Avoid the impostor syndrome and embrace my failures.
