Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Sexton.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Mariah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started working out in 2013 and from 2013 to 2014, I lost a total of 70lbs while I was in school getting my Bachelor’s at Lamar University in Exercise Science and fitness management. All the while losing weight and getting my degree, I started working at Exygon in sales in 2010 until 2014 and that’s where I got my inspiration to get a degree in Exercise Science and become a personal trainer. With me having gone through a weight loss and getting my degree, I decided to get certified from ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) to help spread my knowledge and personal experience of weight loss with others because I felt so great and in control of my body! I also started teaching classes like Zumba, hip hop, and HIIT classes and now due to knee problems I only teach BARRE classes and I also divulge in yoga A LOT! Because of having three knee surgeries I had to give some things up like teaching Zumba and doing more intense workouts, but I just make sure I modify things and get a great workout being smart and listening to my body. So today, even with the knee problems I’m very healthy, I live an active and healthy lifestyle, I eat clean food 90% of the week (I love some great American cookie company, lol) and I love to spread what I know and motivate my clients and others to live the same way and to feel good and be the best version of themselves! Being a personal trainer is one of the best things that has ever happened to me and is such a rewarding job that doesn’t feel like a job at all!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My challenges have definitely been starting off and losing the weight to start with. I lost 70 lbs in 2013 and it was a struggle because I was a full-time student in college with a full-time job, taught classes, and babysat but I really dived into the healthy lifestyle and committed myself to this lifestyle because of knee problems that I have. Although losing weight was a challenge, I love that I went through it so I can help others to do the same and I can really understand their emotions along the way and help support them to the best that I can. Another problem I faced was knee problems, I tore my ACL and meniscus in my left leg in 2006 and in my right in 2007 and then again in my left in 2015. Again, another struggle I had to go through and pain I still deal with but it taught me how to modify things A LOT and teach others how to do the same and still be able to get great and effective workouts.
Please tell us about Exygon.
I work for Exygon Health and fitness, a local gym here in Beaumont, TX as a personal trainer. I’m known for helping others achieve weight loss goals, gaining strength, improving flexibility, and just overall feeling better about themselves. I started working at Exygon in 2010 as a membership coordinator and then got certified in 2014 to be a personal trainer and have been training ever since! I’m proud to say I’ve helped others achieve weight loss goals, I currently have a client that is 70 lbs down in almost a year and another who is 180 lbs down in a little over a year from just eating a healthy diet and working out consistently. I am known for being a huge yoga lover so I love to incorporate that into my client’s workouts and I really aim to please the client with whatever their goals are, I really like to personalize so not everyone is doing the same thing!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would not have done anything differently because I’ve learned SO MUCH to get me where I am today.
