Today we’d like to introduce you to Marie Dang.
Houston Upholstery was established in 1990 by a husband and wife team, Jane and Dan Dang. They opened a retail furniture store which developed into a full scale quality manufacturing furniture and reupholstery business with the help of their two daughters, Marie Dang and Nancy Dang. Mrs.Dang, Marie and Nancy are still working and aim to specialize in reupholstering antiques/ vintage furniture and building quality Made in the USA products. They owe their success to their loyal customers and skilled employees from carpenters, seamstress, upholsterers and sales staff.
A renovated building has been turned into a modern design center with great fabric selection and in-house interior design service.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any small business is never a smooth road. If someone says it perfect and smooth sailing, they are lying!!
I would say the hardest thing is finding great upholstery workers. Our skilled labor in the USA isn’t very good anymore. Finding carpenters/upholsterers or seamstresses are difficult. Building furniture & reupholstering furniture is an art form as well. There needs to be more talent here.

Houston Upholstery & Design specializes in great upholstery work. Taking old fabric off an old antique and updating it with gorgeous new fabric. As a designer I’m here to assist with making sure it works with the home owners’ interior.
What sets us apart is that we aren’t just any ordinary upholstery shop, we are a design studio as well.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My mom and dad had a veeeery small mom and pop retail furniture store and my twin sister & I would run around and jump all over the sofas and chairs. YES, we were annoying.
