Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Stiff.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Marissa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started my business by 1st planning and designing my kids’, my own, and close friends’ events. After I planned and designed my 25th birthday business took off for me. I never thought event planning would be something that I would make a career out of. It’s therapeutic for me. I’m in love with all aspects of decor.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Nothing worth having comes easy!! I’ve faced several obstacles but I think the hardest was moving here to Houston from Mississippi. Yes, I’m from Mississippi, Jackson MS to be exact. I relocated to Houston two years ago, the night Harvey hit!! I always wanted to travel to different states to work so I figured this would be perfect. Well, the storm caused me not to be able to travel back to do events that I was already booked for forcing me to refund close to $2000. This was a huge loss for me. Mainly because this move wasn’t thought through. It was hard trying to find jobs being that I really didn’t have much help with my kids and I had to make sure I was always available for them during and after school. Fast forward to today business is going extremely well. I don’t have to travel back home as much unless I choose to take on an event there. I have much more support with my kids. If it weren’t for determination, consistency and the support from Crosby/Barrett Texas I don’t think I would be where I am today!!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Designs by Marissa – what should we know?
Designs by Marissa doesn’t just specialize in event planning but we also specialize in interior design as well. With event planning we offer services such as planning, designing, same day coordination, balloon services, custom sweets and their stations and much more. As far as interior design we focus solely on making your space a place you never desire to leave. I love to take things and make something out of nothing. I know that’s what I’m most proud of!! I’m known for being very detailed no matter what it is I’m doing. I love to leave a lasting impression. What sets me apart from others would have to be my originality and creativeness.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think being understanding and professionalism has played a major role in my success. When I say understanding, I mean being considerate. Trying my best to help people in anyway possible even if I were taking the short end of the stick at times.
