Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Katz.
Mark, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. By the time I was 5, I had already owned my first camera. That camera ignited the spark that would take me where I am today.
In 1978, I moved to Houston with my family, where in 1985, I then met my wife at UofH. This summer, we will be celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary. We have two children, both of whom have recently graduated from UofH and Boston University respectively.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would have to say that the only challenge I’ve seen would be the digital revolution. I actually loved making the switch from film to digital. It has allowed me to be much more creative. Of course competition has always been a challenge, but with 30 years of technical and creative experience, I haven’t had too much to worry about.
Mark Katz Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
After attending professional photofinishing school In 1985 I established Mark’s One Hour Photo.
The lab quickly gained recognition for both our quality and our service. People soon started asking me to photograph their family portraits. The portrait work led to Wedding and Bar/Bat Mitzvah requests.
Today, I specialize in Family and Business Portraits, as well as Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. I produce many headshots for clients in all fields. From Doctors, Attorneys, Real Estate Agents, etc.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’ve been very fortunate in my career. Some of my proudest moments were becoming Certified (CPP) and being featured on a national level by my album company. But what really makes me proud is when a client sends me a note saying how my involvement has benefitted their event or their personal life. For example, I just received this one last week:
“Mark, Just a short note to thank you for all your work with our Bar Mitzvah for Alex. As I mentioned when I saw you recently, we could not have been happier with all your pre, during and post Bar Mitzvah work as it related to Alex’s Bar Mitzvah. The album turned out great and your attention to detail at all levels of his event was just terrific. I would definitely welcome the opportunity to refer you to others who might need your services for their events in the future.”
