Today we’d like to introduce you to MarSo.
Hi MarSo, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Music has always been around me growing up. My mom use to be the choir director for the church, and as a kid, I was forced to go to choir rehearsal with her. I use to sit in the back trying to entertain myself while she directed the choir, but I always watched how she controlled how everything sounded and could tell if something was off tempo-wise or if the vocalist were off-key. Trying to get things as close to perfection as possible.
I fell in love with the genre rap/R&B riding around the city with my Dad, I use to just like how that type of music made you feel and how listening to it I would instantly start to mimic rappers Candace as I would nod my head to the beat. I started writing songs to instrumentals for youtube when I was 11, not full songs at the time but making words rhyme on printed paper.
With that, I just got more involved with music and started finding ways I could do more and got more hands-on with my craft in ways of songwriting, producing, and rapping.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road to this journey has been more than difficult. I was dealing with a lot of SELF-inflicting things in my life which easily trickled into my music in a negative way.
With everything going on my confidence in my music had fallen to an all-time low and didn’t want to put out any music because of it. It was tough overcoming my own mind, but once I took the real-time to work on myself everything just started falling into place for me. Out of everything that I had been through my biggest competition was myself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a songwriter, producer, and recording artist mostly in the genre of Rap as well as R&B. I am most proud of my ability to genre bend by infusing both of the genres to my liking. I’m the owner of up and coming record label / musical group Yung Fella Empire (YFE).
I feel my sound is unique as it is rap but in a melodic tone with punchlines and metaphors. Music has smoothness as an R&B artist but the execution of skilled rappers with topics.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
If I had to pick one of my favorite childhood memories would have to be the 4th of July with my cousins in the year in 2014. I remembered my uncles buying all types of fireworks and we had shut the block down with all the fireworks we were shooting.
Shut the block down meaning everyone in the neighborhood stopped what they were doing just to watch us pop our fireworks. Had a good bbq as well as all my cousins were in attendance. I think my whole family was there that night it was special. All smiles and love that night.
