Thanks for sharing your story with us Marti. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Spending many years as a Veterinary Technician, I was unhappy with pharmaceuticals and with the way the pets viewed me, mean and scary. I left the vet clinic and began teaching myself to groom dogs with the help of friends and family who became colleagues. I quickly built a home-based business that kept me busy but did not satisfy my need to do more and to be a part of a community where I can educate clients on pet care.
With a tremendous amount of faith and conviction, I began a business plan and sat out on the search for a place to grow. Sealy, TX is home to my mother and my teenage memories. There were no storefront grooming facilities or pet stores in the area so there was definitely a need for the services and compassion that I offer. When I came across the little 630 sq ft building located on Main Street, I knew in my heart that this was the place for Hair of the Dog. This is the place where I will grow.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a small business, especially without any business education background is challenging. The trials, tribulations, and road bumps along the way have taught me so much about life, and just how stubborn I really am.
Hair of the Dog Pet Parlor & Boutique – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Hair of the Dog Pet Parlor and Boutique is a high-quality pet grooming salon. We strive to keep pets happy, healthy, and beautiful. Unlike box pet stores, our goal is to teach proper grooming techniques to pet parents and to allow the pet to look and feel as close to breed standard as comfortably possible. We offer crafted pet products and art from local artists and crafters.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
A moment of pride was when I was invited to a city council meeting and then asked to stand to be recognized as a small business owner and women in small business. It made me very aware that I am here. I am on the road to the woman I am destined to be.
